Hello Board,
We had a good sail on Lake Erie Saturday. Two "minor" problems:
One: We sailed through the hatching cycle of about 50 billion small flies. They looked like mini-mosquitoes but didn't bite. I've expreienced huge swams of sand flies and May flies before, but not these little buggers. They just totally covered the leeward side of everything that was white - my T-shirt, the mainsail, etc.
Two: On returning to our "transient" slip, my 2000 Honda BF 50 kept dying at idle speed. This was the first time I had used the Mac since I got it back from the shop (They cleaned the carbs and replaced all three jets.). What I would greatly appreciate is if someone could give me a very detalied description of where the idle screw is on the Honda BF 50. I've messed with Honda motorcycle carbs before, but not marine engines. I'm a bit tentative on this one.
Thanks,
Dave "Jac"
P.S. Any Finns out there? We went to the dedication of the new Finnish Historical Building and Library in Ashtabula, OH. It is just a few blocks away from the Maritime Museum, and a few more blocks from the Hubbard House (Part of the underground railroad where many runaway slaves hid, waiting for the next boat to Canada and freedom.) Ashtabula has a long history with Finns and Lake freighters. Ashtabula lost some good men when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down, including a Finn neighbor of mine - Paul Riipa. All three of these buildings would be nice to visit, but not worth a trip hundreds of miles just for that purpose. However, if you're in the neighborhood.....
BTW: My 1968 high school yearbook reads like the Helsinki phone book = Ruuska, Topky, Jaskela, Mackynen, Sarri, Kosky, Aho, Sironen, Toivela, Hamelainen, Kotila, Maki, Kinnunen, Talibacka, Herlevi, Pasanen, Nieminen, Palo, Pokki, Lehtinen, Heino, Fahnoe, Raisanen, Jarvi, Ollikainen, Jokiniemi, etc.
P.P.S. Have a safe 4th of July.
