Action sailing pics of us in our M from last weekend

Post by Paul S »

Just wanted to post some pictures of us as seen from another boat as we were sailing last weekend. Almost got the rubrail in the water. The people on the boat said our daggerboard started to come out of the water. These pics are not the furthest we were leaning!

Some additional pictures we took are here:

Do you have an inclinometer (sp?) to know how many degrees?

Great shots! I have some on the way from a friend, will post when I get em! Last few weeks here the winds have been good. Lake sailing can be interesting. The winds can change in a heart beat, been caught 3 times in the last 2 weeks by surprize. Almost tested the Macs self righting ability last time out. We had some newbies to the sport last time out when a gust caught us by surprize. My wife was in the cabin pouring me a marg when it hit. The couple with us had no idea the diff between a rudder and a jib. Generally I always keep the main sheet in hand or on my lap for just this ocassion. This time I didnt, it was at my feet. The gust hit! I yelled! RELEASE THE MAIN SHEET!!! it didnt happen :>( I yelled! RELEASE THE BIG SAIL! it didnt happen :>( MY wife stuck her head out the cabin grabed the main sheet and released, all the while pulling the main sheet between my toes!!! talk about rope burn! In any event scarred the crap outa all of us! We were at 40 plus on the inclinometer. Often get to 35+ on the Inclinometer

Paul, very nice pic's! Wish we had been able to get some of our boat in action at the first RI meet. Excellent place to sail. Plenty of wind!
Will you be going to Champlain? I really need to check out some of your mods.

got to love these boats. all the fun and sun and you used how much gas?
For those that want to know. The blue boat in the pix looks to be heeling
around 25 or so. Looking at the wind direction (from the flag) the main sail seems pulled in to tight. If the main were to be eased at that point
the blue boat would have come up some to 15-20 deg. it would also have picked up a knot or two speed. My guess is you had about 10-15 knots of wind right? the last pix seems to show the blue boat up to about the right
deg. of heel so my guess is that the sail was eased or there was a course change. It also apears to be pulling away from the white boat at that time.

wind speed?

Post by Night Sailor »

I too thought there was a lot of heeling for there being no whitecaps on the water. Maybe it was the main pulled in too close. Maybe all the beer was on the port side....

What was the wind speed, and boat speed. Was it slower because it got the blue part into the water? :-)

I could never get any of my boats to sail unless the stars and stripes were flying...Isn't that a given :)
