Anyone interested in carpool/boatpool this weekend to Ishtmu

Post by mermaelee »

I really want to go this weekend to Isthmus to see Mike and Roger with all of the rest of you wonderfull Mac people. I am the high school teacher and chiropractor who sailed with topsail kids on weeklong trips to catalina.
You can see my wife and I at www.welchland.com .My wife and I would like to either chip in for gas say $50 - $70 and stay aboard your mac (we can both fit in any of the three double birth situations on the mac) we have a X and wouldn't mind a stay on an M for a change. Or if you would like to ride with us on our mac and stay with us then pitch in for my gas which will be $120 -$140 with these prices. If you would spilt half. I have a 90hp and I get to Isthmus in only 2 hrs from Huntington Beach launch ramp. I know it sounds cozy for strangers but I don't think we snore too loud and can pack lightly. We would leave Saturday morning around 7am and return Sunday around 7pm before dark. Motor both ways usually with mast down I have inflatable dinghies and kayaks for use. So how about saving some money and getting to meet some nice people. You can email me at ben@welchland.com if you are interested. If using our boat my wife and I usually sleep in the rear berth so we could take up to four more adults between the V berth and dinette berth.

sure you can come with us we smoke and drink like fish my dog only sheds a little, about a pound of hair a day. Karen says I snore but I cant hear it. I like to go to bed around 2am and sleep in till noon but karen would be up around 4am you would have to sleep with my 6 year old but he only wets the bed every other night. Come to think of it so does the dog. If we leave Friday I miss bath night sat. but thats ok.

I jest here but I think you would enjoy the weekend better if you took your boat to meet all those great folks.

Now if ole Roger put the invite out, he has a little more room.

:x Since you guys don't care to save $ and carpool / Macpool to Isthmus, I went ahead and scheduled myself for a root canal :o that Saturday. I thought you mac folks would be nire friendly
I'll have my own fun this summer in an attempt to go to Santa Barbara Island to see the elephant seals. My wife and I are obviously more brave and capable of going alone without the mac fleet!

Please don't be offended by the playful sarcasm. Your's is a really generous offer. But spending 2-3 days in the Mac's close quarters with a couple that you haven't even met is quite different than meeting up for a impromptu day sail.

What is the name of your boat? What day / time are you leaving from Surf City? Diane and I would like to meet up with you at Twin Harbors. Our boat is the Definite Addiction (blue) and we are leaving mid-day Friday and plan to anchor in close.

Maybe we'll take you up on you offer another day. Have a smooth crossing!

Yeah Mermalee, it gets up close and personal down there--inside a mac. Taking another couple isn't realistic --makes the boat heavier and more unstable during the crossing, especially if its rough! Guests think that be cause the boat is big, they can get up and walk around mid journey. The helmsman has to scold them to sit back down, hence my nickname-bligh.

Mark I really would advise you to leave earlier if possible-- 9 am latest. The wind usually kicks up in the afternoon, journey will be less pleasant.
You could drive down to San Pedro(ramp opens at 6 am, better leave the valley by 4am!) and launch with me if you'd like. Its only 21 miles to isthmus from here. I would leave you behind after a couple of miles(i do got the 90, you know!), once I was sure you were okay, but would maintain radio contact and call the coast guard if you didn't show up!
I would also recommend mooring(only 21 bucks), so you could be closer to all us, but if you do anchor go to little fisherman's cove. Shallow and you can get REAL close to shore-- even put your second anchor(required) on shore.

Mermaelee wow didnt mean to offend. Root canel the deductable has to be more than you would pay for gas.

I was trying to be funny, If you didnt have a boat and I was going, I still
think the Mac is too small for two couples and a dog, Not even knowing the other couple would even be harder. I think you proved my point and we never met. I was kidding about what I wrote up top, and Its seems you didnt like it. Well imagine being stuck on a small boat for two days
with me. I would be more than happy to offer daysails to strangers, In fact I have done just that, but a weekend to me is a little too hard, even on a 40 foot boat.

But you have a boat and your not far from Catalina and there will be many
nice folks going some with way better people skills than I have.
Im sure they would like to meet you and your wife.
If you want to go with another couple on your boat , dont you have any friends/family that could go with you?

Rolf,

You mean that "the authorities" require putting out two anchors?

Actually, they might-- The 2 harbor patrol cruise out there as well. All I remember is that when I anchored there, I was quickly informed by the two boats i was in-between that I MUST have a stern anchor as well. I ended up buying a small 15 pound danforth at the 2 harbor store, complete with rode and chain for a price as reasonable as west marine. The boaters around me were very helpful in helping me set it with their dinghy as well.

Rolf thank you for your offer - ain't no way that my wife is going to get up at 3 am and leave at 4 am. This is supposed to be fun. The traffic notwithstanding, we are leaving home @ 8:30 am.

Ths forecast is for flat seas and only 7-10 knot winds the whole day, so this time leaving later will be okay. Pat and his wife are going to accompany us on their boat Tropico as we motor-sail over.

See you there, and Mermaelee I didn't catch the name of your X. If we don't see you in the water, let's meet at the Harbor Reef Restaurant at 7 PM.

I don't think it's a rule, and I don't see it at the Two Harbors anchoring page or on http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/twoH ... sGuide.pdf

But the friendly Harbor Patrol types require all kinds of unaccustomed things. They like to give you a dye tablet for your toilet to make sure you are not - ahem - suffering any leakage.

Actually, common courtesy says that first into an anchorage can dictate the style of anchoring. Those areas probably get crowded enough that two-point anchoring is the only way to accomodate everyone. No harm, no foul.
