Backed my boat down the driveway this afternoon

Post by Scott »

Brought it home from my brothers place today. I was gonna go get it early this week and launch it tomorrow but we got busy. I have too much crap in boxes to bolt on I dont think I will be able to launch this weekend. Bummer, its goin to be nice.

I just wanted to post this to make the guys whos boats are still under tarps envious.

Yeah yeah I know, thefloridians and californians have been sailing all winter. I should be sailing by wednsday if the weather holds.

Oh well Im off to the basement to work on my boat!!

What is this word "winter"?

I spent all day getting the swimming pool ready, just have to back flush the filter and I am ready. There is about 3 months here were it gets down in the low 50's, brutal for swimming.

I am living in central florida right now. Sailing would have been wonderful during this whole somewhat luke-warm period. To bad I dont have a boat :(.... One day... One Day...

I'm on lake Ontario. I took the cover off yesterday.

Spring is here.

I hope to get it cleaned up inside and out tomorrow and then a possible launch on Sunday.

I'll probably take it out again to do abit more work on it before taking it to it's summer slip.

Got my fingers crossed that the weather holds.

First time in a couple years Ive made it out in March - very nice weather today in upstate NY (just took the Island out for an hour)

BEst part of trailering sailboat is you arent tied to the launch schedule of the big guys....

got the boat in the driveway where i've been modifying it for the last 4 weeks. it's real nice in tenn and hopefully today's the day for launching.
I CAN"T WAIT!!!
modificatiions include:
-fixing a leaky window-this shouldn't be on a boat less than 1 year old
(incidentally no one warned me about 3m 5200--what a mess!! :| )
-battery condition meter
-depth finder
-curtain off the rear berth-mainly to keep it clean
-extra lighting-interior
-hammocks
-removing door to potty--on an M you have to be sitting straight across from to be able to see in there and door seemed to be in the way
-fire extinguisher--mounted in potty(Hmmmm)
-wind vane
-extra fan in galley
-hinges on storage compartments
-ice chest mounted(we put it on seat area beside the sink when it is forward-nobody ever sits there anyway unless now with the door off they want to gaze into the potty area :D - and we never intend to use it as a berth)
-small bilge pump in ice chest-so we don't have to try to pick it up to empty the water--we just pump it into the sink
-mounted a storage box next to the ice chest
-grill mounted

the hardest part in all this was drilling and sawing the first holes--but after i got used to carving up my new boat it was fun

let the games begin!! :D

Excersize caution, as with body modification, tatooing and self mutilation it becomes addicting!!

What kind of boat do you have rookie, post it in your profile.

Im pretty well done with mine. Just waiting for a nice day to launch. I do still have to stuff the cusions back into the covers. It was hard enough getting them out, dont know oif I'll be able to get them back in. I thought my cusions were in great shape until I washed them. They had a little mold on the vinyl so I committed. After washing the fabric and vinyl is about 10 shades lighter. Suprising how you dont notice deterioration over time. Too gradual to notice but the improvement was abrupt enough to be startling.

Got most everything stuffed back into the boat. Still need to mount the rudders. Wifee helped with the cusions and they werent as hard to do as I thought.

She who must be obeyed asked if I was going through everything and paring it down. I told her I was aware that the first time that she asked for something and it wasnt there I would be Keel hauled. She laughed. I pointed out the Pink Barbie fish net. She said 'We use that all the time"!! True but silly.

Finished The lines aft mod and put in the clutches. I have 2 sheave organizers and only need one on each side for now however I figured I'd plan ahead. For now Im gonna use one for the main halyard and one for the vang. On the same side as the main Ill use one sheave for an "over the top" fairlead for the spinnaker tackline. I would use the spare on the othe side for the furler but I put stantion mount fairleads on for that ppurpose.

Cant wait to go sailing!!

Rook,
I am from Knoxville and do not remember any substantial wind on the lakes there abouts... and I grew up on Fort Loudon. Where in the heck are you "sailing" that thing? I would imagine the wind conditions had something to do with your choice of the Mac...

You are correct in that sailing on a glorified river is a challenge. You just have to get used to constant changes. The yacht club is on Loudon(10 minutes from my house and business) but the best sailing is on Watts Bar Lake where there is also a fine club.

As to my choice of a Mac:
-summer time here has very unpredictable wind so it's nice to be able to motor cruise when it's too sweltery--but still sail when the winds are up
-lakes here have shallow coves-great for overnighting but unaccessable to most sailboats--not the Mac
-most people sail within a few miles of their club here--but with the Mac my "playground" is extended. For instance there is a large fireworks display here every Labor Day which is near the football stadium on the lake. It's 31 miles from our club.My wife and I took the Mac on an easy cruise in the evening(Along with hundreds of motorboats) watched the display, spent the night and easily made it back the next morning early enough to go to work. The distance makes it prohibitive for most sailboats with out blocking off 2 days to do.
-there are 5 lakes with in 45 minutes drive of Knoxville--all possible with a Mac
-these lakes are part of the TVA system so they go down to winter time pool to return for season in April(I'm sooo glad it's now April!!)
Our club doesn't have an accessable ramp in winter pool so it's nice to be able to get in and out in those other shallow ramp areas yearround

Every boat has it's compromises but I gladly accept the Mac"s downsides for it's upsides.

We sail on the Hudson river up near Albany - its tidal with 3 mph currents, shifty gusty winds, and serious barge and tanker traffic that comes up through hourly to watch for.

Roger writes that the you learn the first 90percent of sailing in an hour, the next 10 percent takes a lifetime.

I realised we are starting to make progress on the last 10 percent when we are taking out our 17 foot Island and never even putting the kicker on the bracket - we sailed downwind 2 miles, and then turned around and beat back up river for 2 miles against tide and current...of course it helps that the Island points up about 35 degrees to the wind!!

Ahhh Boomsday! I have spent many a Labor day holiday at that spectacular celebration. Always wondered what it would be like doing that from the river. What a blast.

Slash day was last wed for me--took a glorious 2 hour sail ...therapeutic!!!!
this wed I'll take my staff(I'm a dds) for a sail as they've been bugging me to take them....does that qualify my mac as a business expense?
Rookie

Yes that was boomsday---quite a sight from the water but next year I'll not get so close---got black fallout from the firewaorks on the decks--still it was great
