I've seen many 1 million candle power spotlight spotlights. They seem common. One store had a 6 million candle power spotlight. Is this beyond the realalistic amount needed? Can you imagine getting flashed by that thing.
Funny, I mentioned in a different thread just yesterday how much I dislike being flashed by zillion candlpower spotlights.
I suppose one would be good to have in a true emergency, but keep in mind once you've used it, or some jerk has used one on you, your night vision will be compromised for as much as 40 minutes. Even a moderately sized regular flashlight will do some damage to your night vision.
For routine nightime operation, your night vision and a good pair of 7x50 binoculars is a better investment.

Worst being flashed experiences? (not the guy in the raincoat)
Mayby I'll get that 10 million candle power one and go out with it some dark night to see if I can find Chip.
We had one of those 1M CP lights on our old boat. Did not use it much, your eyes got wrecked easily if you glanced at it..not to mention other boaters that you might flash. Mainly used it to get the attention of other boaters with their 1+ M CP lights on during the 4th of July concert/fireworks on the Charles river.
I did get a new one this year (cord/cordless) 1M CP lights 'Just in case'. They are great when they are used correctly.

I know you were joking. I was talking the opportunity to pass along my thoughts on the matter. And I disagree: A good pair of 7x50s is sufficient about 99% of the time, moon or not. Ask anyone who has been aboard a naval vessel what they use at night.

Answer: Radar
It's the same price as 28.3 of those high powered lights (about $850). And it works on moonless nights and in the rain. If you get one, you'll be surprised how valuable it can be and how much you will use it.
