Weekend in San Diego

Post by Timmy Z »

Weekend in San Diego.

Just returned form an interesting weekend in San Diego. The last two weeks here in southern California has given us temperatures in the mid to high 80s. Of course last weekend gave me temps in the 60s, I hate cold weather. I know I know, Im a spoiled southern Californian but nonetheless, IT WAS COLD. I arrived Thursday evening, rigged, launched and found a place to drop the hook. Spent the rest of the evening with my ST 4000 owners manual and a nice bottle of merlot. Rained during the night but woke up to sunny skies, big puffy clouds and no wind. Perfect to calibrate the new auto helm. Calibrated the compass, set the response time and set a course. It worked well but searched too much for my comfort. I tried to get away without the rudder sensor. I will be installing it this week. The wind came up and I spent the rest of the day sailing and playing with the ST 4000. Got on the hook about 4:00 and finished off the bottle of wine. Rained again Friday night. Saturday woke up to sunny skies, no wind (mid 60s again), I had to go ashore and drive three hours to a funeral, that wasnt good, but made it back to San Diego that evening with my wife this time. We had a fine meal and slept like babies until woken up by what seemed to become nightly rain but this time wind. The wife was a little worried that we may drag the anchor, but I assured her that we were fine. Sunday morning again sun, clouds, and 60s.

Two years ago, a group from this site sailed from San Diego to Ensanada, by the way it was a great time. One of the couples trailered from New Mexico and is known to us as Francis. They (Francis, Wife Vicky, niece, and grandson) were in town to welcome their son back from well we dont know where he was. Let me just say, He is in the Navy. Any way they wanted to reunite and maybe do some sailing. So we met under blue skies and no wind. We decided to go to breakfast and wait for the wind. It came up and we set out. I was setting the sails and Francis at the helm. Francis tried to maneuver around a small sailboat when the helm snapped and as the old salts say, The rudder doesnt answer.

I have a 1995 X with the original helm. After the comments about these units on this site, I decided to buy an extra one ($78.00 on ebay, with the cable) and keep it on board, just in case. I also built an emergency tiller before we went to Ensanada. I posted it on the mod page if you want to check it out. Well I can say that the emergency tiller worked almost perfect and got us back to where we could drop anchor and install the backup helm. After about an hour, we were on the Pacific sailing in near perfect weather.

Anyway, the weekend was great. Just keep tools, extra parts, and know your boat.

Good wind, Timmy Z.

This past holiday weekend, SF Bay Area enjoyed nighttime lows @ 35F.
I think it was the polar influence blowing down here from Hermiston OR. :x

Timmyyyyyyyyyyyy (sorry had to do it, reminds me of the kid in South Park),

Can you give some more info on where in SD you launched, price, where you anchored etc... Always wanted to trailer down there and play. Stayed away though mostly due to the number of boats I usually see in a fairly small area in the bay.

Come on down

Post by Timmy Z »

Jetta01,

San Diego is one of the best places to sail in the world, especially if you are on a budget. I launch at Dana Landing in Mission Bay. Its right where West Mission Bay and Ingraham St. meet. You can see the circle bay and parking lot. Google map search it and click on the satellite and hybrid tab. Launching and parking are FREE. No wash water though. You can drop a hook in any of the coves but I prefer Marniers Basin, just north of the entrance to the Bay across from San Fernando Place on the map. Cost for anchoring. FREE. You can stay on the hook for (I think) 72 hours. The Harbor Patrol checks every evening. If you want to stay longer, they usually allow it if you ask. You can sail all day in the pacific and even round Point Loma and anchor in San Diego harbor. Just make sure the give the Point plenty of berth because of the kelp forest. When you decide to come on down, let me know and Ill try to meet you and maybe raft up.

Timmy Z could be a San Diego Chamber of Commerce spokesperson. You are right on regarding launching, anchoring, etc in Mission Bay. San Diego Bay offers a lot too - more bay area available for sailing, free launching, parking, & anchoring. Need to call the Harbor Police for 72 hr anchoring at Glorietta Bay (619 686-6272). 72 hour weekend anchoring, is also available, Harbor Police permit required, at La Playa. The two main launch ramps are at Shelter Island and Chula Vista. CV is at the end of South Bay but is a very good ramp and uncrouded. Shelter Isl can get very busy on week ends especially during fishing seasons. Week days are fine.
Timmy IJ'd like to invite you to consider joing our sailing club. Venture Yacht Club is active year round with cruises to Lake Powell, Lake Mead and sometimes the San Juans plus much more. Web site at http://www.vycsd.com and info@vycsd.com We have 70 different families members sailing Macs, Hunters, Catalinas and other trailerable boats including the first T28 on the west coast. Let me know if you have questions. My wife is treasurer and is always glad to accept the $40 pro-rated annual membership (plus $40 initiation).

Email murbon@sbcglobal.net or give me a call at 858 705-0267.

Good sailing, Murv Barry

weekend in San Diego

Tim,
Well we got back to NM ok with no problems. It seemed a little longer this time though for some reason. Thanks again for the sail. It was great seeing you again and meeting your wife. We all really had a lot of fun!!!
It was interesting to go through the failed helm incident. It was good to see you go through the emergency helm rig. That was very impressive!
Changing it out was pretty good too. It is always good to learn more things about the boat. My son got in on time and everything went fine. It was really neat to see the homecoming of his ship coming in. We went aboard and took a small tour of it. Maybe next time we are in we can call you up and you could take a tour of it too if you want. It is something to see. He's happy to be home for a little while before he has to go back. Hopefully next time we can bring our boat again. This year here is the dryest on record since the early 1900s I think. I sure hope there is some water to sail in this summer. I sure do wish I could be by the ocean like you. Well, once again thanks for your hospitality. O yea, I think Vickie is drying out from there little raft experience too.
