Sinkhole empties cannal!

Post by OverEasy »

Hi All!

Came across an interesting boating (of sorts) disaster over in England.
One of the canals collapsed due to a sinkhole!

Canal boating is one of those things that we’d like to do if the opportunity ever presented itself either in England, France or elsewhere in Europe. It seems like a great way to really enjoy a country and it’s countryside at a leisurely pace.

While such incidents as a sinkhole opening up or a canal wall collapse are very rare this incident does show it occasionally happens even in idyllic surroundings. Glad it appears that nobody was seriously hurt!

Could you imagine having the “literal bottom” fall out from under your boat? :o :? :| Sheesh!

Best Regards,

Wow.

It seems the biggest concern for those narrowboats is depth and width of the canals.

You can rent a narrowboat. I never knew this existed. Looks like a fun and interesting way to see the countryside. These canals have an interesting history as a "shipping" system before highways and trucks.

One of my favorite travel vloggers did a great series.

For those of us who can't enjoy boating in winter, we live vicariously via youtubers.

Another great Downielive video of the engineering of this rotating "lock" the Falkirk wheel. So cool.

I never knew these canals existed and are used so heavily by boating RVers.

Our last trip to Europe in June '24 started with a layover in London staying on a dutch narrow boat on the Thames.

It was moored on the 'Uber Boat' dock so we could just buy a day pass for their catamarans that run up and down the Thames all day.

The resident first mate was great company!
