New Tohatsu 20

Post by Ixneigh »

The engine was finally installed after 2 1/2 months. They had to get a tech in from Tampa after 2 other techs ghosted the job. He came in on Saturday and I agreed to assist him. He left at 8PM, after first start, run and function check

The two things which seemed to be a problem were, one, the old west marine throttle unit is difficult to remove without cutting another hole in the binnacle. I managed to do it by removing all the screws i could get to, and once the unit came apart, removing the pieces one by one. I did enlarge the opening by an inch at the bottom but that was covered up later. The 2nd issue was that the Tohatsu throttle unit is all self contained including trim and ignition. So its large and doesn't fit on the binnacle. They said they would try to mount it vertically somehow, but I like my solution better. I had the wood parts ready when the guy from Tampa showed up, after having spent the previous day designing it. There is some length of shift cable on the outside of the binnacle, however its still an overall win because the throttle is now easily accessible for inspection or repair. No way you're doing that with the OEM throttle. Not sure when I'll be launching. My seasons halfway done already.

Amazing that it's so hard to get it installed. Probably be easier if you were adding 4 of those massive 350's on there.

Can't wait to hear how it performs.

The place which did it is having problems with their help, only I didn't know that when they gave me the proposal. The guy is a sailor but didn't neg the Macs, and we chatted a bit. He's a decent enough guy but the shop, I later learned, is moving to another location, so some workers are busy with that. But not the techs, obviously. The boat herself may have been annoyed at being away from her usual quiet spot because she wasn't making it easy. First guy removed the old engine and the outside part of the throttle control, but he didn't have any help. He had to have a heart stent put in a few days later, which delayed the job obviously, it was weeks before their other tech was available after a new family addition. That guy unboxed the engine and hung it but didn't bolt it on, and then left and even the manager couldn't get in contact with him. Finally, after suggesting that I my brother and I attempt to complete the job ourselves, the manager called one of his old techs to come down from the city of Tampa on a Saturday to do it. I agreed to assist him with things like running cables and tightening fasteners such as the engine mounting bolts. I also had the throttle mounting parts ready to go since his job was engine work not carpentry. The boat was returned to my house yesterday, and I spent most of the day loading gear back aboard.
I need to find the correct prop now. Theres a four bladed one available from Amita. Anyone have an idea of the best pitch for my use?

Looks perfect.

But I dont understand why the throttle is Not starbord side inside the pedestal. With mercury it Works fine... So it should work with any brand....

Re: Mercury throttle
I am not sure. The new throttle has the ignition and trim switches built in. Maybe there are models of this engine which get a different control unit. The one without power tilt might be smaller. The dealer said this was the only throttle available with this particular model engine. Not sure if thats true. Seems odd the wouldn't offer a right and left handed model. Also not sure why the dealer couldn't just use the old control. Maybe it was not cost effective to wire all the controls separately, even though it seemed a simple task to me. In the end, I actually dont mind the location of the new throttle since I can steer with my dominant hand while operating the controls now. I did not research nissans options. I didnt understand the repowering process enough to do that. I should have, i guess. Another issue is that this engine with its full featured control unit, likely shares that control unit with a line of motors up to 90 hp. So I get one oversized for a small engine.

Size it like any other new prop but prioritize it for low-end power instead of high speed. I'd begin with the largest diameter prop the boat can swing and then find the highest pitch that gets just inside the low end of the manufacturer's RPM target. That will prioritize low speed power and maneuverability over top speed. You may not get it (much) above hull speed but you will you will have a lot of usable power below that point.

Try not to get below the suggested RPM range. The more you get below the target range the more strain you will be putting on the connecting rods, crankshaft, wrist pins, and drive components.

I was checking at online outboards and this one comes with a 4 blade high thrust prop, not sure on the size.
