Sailing Class, US Sailing Basic Keelboat

Post by Willburrrr2003 »

Good Morning Everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend!! The first two days of the 3 day sailing class I signed up for were this weekend. I have been reading the course book for the last week and a half, and the class was great! The instructor did a great job on the teaching side of things, and their on the water instruction was Awesome! Got the feel for motoring around the fairway of the marina, leaving the dock, returning to the dock and doing so under current as well as maneuvering around large expensive boats that had docked at our slip. two days of prepping the boat, raising and lowering the sails, and with the wind on the second day heaving too right after raising the sails to put in a reef. Sailing the second day was way more exciting as the first day the wind didn't cooperate lol. Sailed on all points of sail, lots of tacking and Jibing, man overboard drills (figure 8) then dropping the sails and returning to dock. Learned how to use the weather van on top of the mast really well for tracking all points of sail, and trusting the heal of the boat. Sail trim makes sense but will take practice to really get it down, the telltales make good sense but the ones on the Jib were hard to see from the tiller. I think will be easier on out Mac 22 as I have the tiller extension on ours which will give me a better position to see the Jib. All and All it was an amazing fun weekend with Windworks power and Sail Club out of Shilsoal Marina in Ballard WA. I highly recommend these guys if you know anyone in the area looking to learn to sail! I have 1 more day next week to finish off the class, then the next step is to get our Mac 22 to the water...

Regards,

Will R.

I'm glad you had fun and that you are learning so much. You are starting out right and the way you are headed I predict a lot of fun in your future.

Congratulations!

I think you are doing the right thing. I took the same course last summer and it was a lot of fun. I had planned to take the follow-up courses this year, but I had some gotchas pop up that will probably delay me taking them until next spring.

Ideally, you get some tiller time in after the class and supplement experience with class time.

Safety first when it comes to boats and family. No amount of fun is worth having someone get hurt (or worse)!

That class sounds like it's well worth it. My Brother-in-law lives on Camano and has a sailing dinghy that he's afraid to sail. I'm going to recommend this class to him.
