Collapsible Water Jug - Draw Tube

Post by chipmonger »

Has anyone modified their collapsible water jug to incorporate a draw tube inside the jug? I've seen mods for the larger hardbody containers but not for the ones provided with the 26c's. How about finding a compatible replacment cap that a draw tube could be added?

Thanks,

Ken

When I used the "factory" jug, the key was keeping the cap tight so it collapsed as the water was drawn out. The problem was always leaking and air got in and broke the pump seal.

I don't remember what the cap looked like. I would think you could mod the cap and add a tube somehow. That's what I did with my hard sided jugs.
For me, I gave up on that collapsable jug. It always leaked. I find the hard jugs are so much superior.

That's what I thought I'd hear. I found one place that seems to have a modded cap with a draw tube but they don't sell them separately (from the jug). I'll just be using it for overnighters, etc so I'll deal with it for now and mark it as a project for later.

Thanks,

Ken

Back when I used the collapsible jug, I turned it such that the valve was on the bottom. So, it was drawing off the bottom (or close to it anyway). Used a towel or two under and around it to keep it in position.

I now have to get into the boat to check, but believe what Jimmy said was the most natural way to use it.

If you made it work with the nozzle on top, you are more of a genius than I (although my wife says a soup spoon is more of a genius than I am, so...). :)

I always used mine with the nozzle on top. The key was to make sure there was no air in the bag. It would collapse on itself as the water was drawn out. Never a problem as long as the air was removed.

I went in the boat to see what the collapsible jug looks like. I have two, but only saw one. I believe this one is not what came with the boat, but you can see that it is designed to be inverted.

You can see that the manufacturer clearly made it to be hung bottom up.

I also have a 30 gallon (113.5L) bladder with an electric pump in the bow, but I only use that for refilling the PortaPotty after each pump out, washing dishes, and for washing down the cockpit. I have a shower nozzle in the the stern. The two collapsible water jugs are for drinking water.

Ray,
There is a "shower" nozzle that can be attached to those collapsible bags. I'm pretty sure that the tab on the bottom is for use when you are using it that way.

I’m sure that’s the case, but placing the collapsible jug with the nozzle down, gravity is doing its job. No air gaps to interfere with the pumping.

Ended up popping off the white spigot off the cap and drilled the cap carefully with a 5/8" bit so I could insert a hose down to the base of the jug. Combining this with doing the "Thrifty 26S" $14 fresh water refill system so I can just leave the jug there until the end of the season.

Just be aware that mold can grow in the tube if no water flows through it for awhile.

I run peroxide thru. Rinses out clean, no taste and safe enough for humans.
