Awesome view from the helicopter. That dry harbor is incredible.

Re: Lake Mead record low water level
About a week ago, I saw an aerial video showing the site where the Colorado River flows into Lake Mead.
There is NO water from the Colorado entering the lake. Looks like a barren desert.
A situation that was totally avoidable, yet the problem was allowed to fester and grow.
Just another reason California needs to fall off the face of the earth.

Re: Lake Mead record low water level
There are a couple Mid Western states in that same bag if one where to be honest. Been there and doubt there’s an honest reason to go back
Re: Lake Mead record low water level
It is amazing how many states feed off that one river.
California is by far the worst as the water has been used to create farmland from deserts and extends all the way to LA.
It is a state with little to no redeemable value. All the fires there have nothing to do with the so-called "climate crisis". Most are set by the power companies and careless people.
The state government continues to spend money on everything except for proper land and forest management.
Before the Californicators fly in here and beat on me, I lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego while working for Bank of America. Two of the three make Detroit look like paradise.

Sorry you feel that way.
Irrigation is one tool that is used to make that farm land the most productive in the world!
While the Midwest grows a lot of wheat, corn and soy the soil and farm methods leave a lot to be desired.
California farmers get almost 2.5 times (often much more) as much productivity from a gallon of water vs midwestern farms. The soil capability in the Midwest just isn’t as good for the most part.

Just an FYI, Illinois and Indiana share with Ukraine the distinction of having the most fertile soil in the world (Chernozem ). No, not all dirt is equal.
Re: Lake Mead record low water level
Southern California is a desert. The "soil" that Lake Mead irrigates is SAND.OverEasy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 10:08 pm![]()

Saudi Arabia has reclaimed huge swaths of desert by doing the same thing. However, this water comes from the Gulf and is desalinated by large plants.
Instead of mooching, they should have built the same as well as devised a system to harness the massive amount of run off that occurs from the LA river.
I have no sympathy for the state. I lived there almost 20 years. Finally left in the late 1990's. Water has been a huge problem for over 5 DECADES but all of a sudden it is due to this nebulous thing called "global warming".
Nah, just a convenient excuse for pi$$ poor management of its resources.

Re: Lake Mead record low water level
Funny…. We spent over 20 years in California too and absolutely loved it there!
! Fantastic place
!
Great people
Diversity
Tolerance
Exciting and challenging work environments
Innovative & Creative on multiple levels
Wonderful places throughout to visit, see, hike, explore, stay

We loved every minute of it there in California

Only reason we left was the next client needed us on in the Northeast to help with their jet engine company. We were REALLY sad to leave but that is part of the life of a technology development design engineer and project manager. It’s how I got from NJ to Texas to California to New England. Jet engines, portable turboshft test cells, data acquisition/reduction systems, rocket motors, Aerospace system FMEA/CIL, Airborne Radar Warning Systems, Synthetic Steam Reformation Systems for radiologic/biological hazard destruction, plasma physics, sputter deposition and electron beam coating systems, and several patents/trade secrets later I can’t say I didn’t enjoy my career or the places I’ve lived but the time in California was really enjoyable.
Again, sorry your experience appears to have not been the best. Maybe it’s best that you moved away. Again, sorry you didn’t enjoy your time there. For us though it and the people and tolerance were absolutely fantastic!
!
If you want to see ‘sand’ irrigation you should look at Arizona! At least the Central Valley of California started with actual dirt. In Arizona that is pure sand. Same with cotton farming in west Texas absolutely mind boggling the unfettered irrigation they just spill on the ground of spray in the air to raise something that they have to provide virtually every bit of nutrients for it to grow. California uses a fraction of the water Arizona and Texas and gets a whole lot more product for it.
Now it is a shame that this mega drought is impacting the water level in Lake Mead but there is an awful lot of abject wastage elsewhere that could be out to good use through cooperative effort. But there will always be uncreative small minded people who think little beyond their local short mindedness. Sad for them given that there could be a tremendous benefit to be had.
Sorry you couldn’t find a way for you to enjoy what California had to offer you while you were there.
Best Regards

Re: Lake Mead record low water level
Umm.... California derives more than 15% of its surface water supplies from the Colorado River. That's a considerable "fraction".

I never said I did not enjoy my time in California.
During the 80's, it was THE place to live and work. I was young and had just finished business school in New England. I have a lot of great memories and still have a few friends that I met back then.
Water was still a huge problem then. 40 years ago! I had just finished building a home in La Jolla and the last step was landscaping. Within twelve months, most of it had died due to another shortage. It was called a "drought" back then too. However, this was the first time that the city put water police in a fleet of cars that roamed and ticketed folks for using sprinklers or washing their cars. This is what happens when you choose to live in a desert.
California today is NOT the same place it was back then. High-tech and other companies are leaving the state in droves. Homelessness and crime are out of control due to the idiotic policies of the county and state governments. The population has declined so much that the state has lost representation in congress. Now I see San Diego County has told all parents to keep their kids at home unless they come to school masked. This just took effect for summer school and the fall semester.
When was the last time you visited LA or San Francisco? I still travel to California on business, and it has gotten to the point that I refuse to stay in the downtown area of either city. They are that bad and that dangerous.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
