Replacing Rudder Gudgeon 26X 1999

Post by keithl »

The rudder gudgeon (bracket) on the starboard side is aluminium while the port side is stainless. The previous owner bent and tore the aluminium bracket. I have purchased a stainless steel bracket.

THE QUESTION :

Do the securing bolts go through the transom i.e. bolt + washer + locknut .

By actual measurement, the transom on my Mac 22 is 1/4 inch thick. If your 26 is similar, through-bolting is the only way to go.

I am hoping an X owner will answer you, but I'll give you a power sailer response, anyway.

The transom on the M is pretty thick, due to carrying a big outboard for planing use. I would expect the X to be similar. All of mt rudder bracketry is through-bolted and bedded in 4200 (I hope it's not 5200).

Lower rudder brackets at bottom of pic. As Chip says above, yours are likely to be through-bolted.

Transom thickness at my bilge pump discharge ( midway up transom) is about 7/16".

Maybe one of the X Owners can give you the real story.

I'll climb into the back of mine tomorrow and see if I can give you an answer.

I did not find any signs of bolts, nuts, or washers in the area behind my gudgeons. From the outside they appear to be held in with large lag bolts. I did find some very sharp fiberglass shards though.
