Good Cheap Sheets for Genoa?

Post by Bilgemaster »

I've been casting out 2020's cobwebs from my poor neglected :macx:, and my foresail's sheets are in a sorry state. I see Blue Water Yachts offers a 5/16" x 66' for genoas with roller furling in white for $43.56, with other colors for an additional $16 at http://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/l201-100.htm.

Then again, even a casual googling turned up a 5/16" by 100' Double Braid Polyester Rope, Blue with White and Black Tracers from Blue Ox for just $39.99 and free shipping with fairly kind reviews, including one from an old Venture owner, at:

In short, unless anyone has a better recommendation for an economical but decent line, I'm leaning towards that Blue Ox offering, and I'm not too picky about color--white would be just fine.

I got two of those lines you linked to use as my jib and main halyards. Seems like really good quality and it was a great price. I need to cut and seal them because they're about 40' longer than the original halyards and it's a lot of excess line hanging off the mast.

Everything I've bought from bwyachts is good quality. Seems like prices are around where others are but I feel good about know when I need it to work it will. :macx:

Yeah, I'm a big fan of BWY for Mac-specific gear. But rope's kind of a generic shop-around item so long as the quality's there. Blue Ox is American made, and not some sketchy Chinese floss of questionable provenance (Proudly woven from the pubes of reactionary dissidents!). It seems to have worked just fine for Democritus and many others, and for about the same price as BWY's Plain Jane white I get an always handy extra 40 feet of the stuff in that snazzy blue. So, I just now went ahead and ordered it.

Thanks to all who pitched in on this topic.

Not to hijack but- what lines do you all use for cdi flex furler 2? The one that came with gets bunched in the drum sometimes. I've been considering a dyneema I have already as its pretty slick and obviously up to the challenge.

When I can, I try to buy from bwyachts. We used to have a west marine in Mich. City. Too many people bought from Walmart, and now we don't have a West Marine. :P

I actually try to avoid We$t Marine, since they seem to price everything in some wacky inflated 3rd world currency. $30 for a quart of their Plain Jane house brand paint thinner? Wally World, here I come! Oh wait! It's on sale for only three times what it ought to cost: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-mar ... t--5437207

Yeah, West Marine is a double-edged sword. While their prices are often a rip-off, it's really nice to have that marine-specific part or doohickey you need, to be able to see it in person and, depending on the store, to have a knowledgeable employee there to talk to about it. I go in ours occasionally and I'm happy that they are there AND I can almost get why the prices are so extreme considering there's rarely anyone else in the store.

We$t Marine is a great place to go for shopping online: 1) enter store and find suitable product 2) whip out phone and Google SKU 3) buy online 4) exit store.

I'm pretty sure West Marine will price match, even Amazon pricing. The nearest West Marine store to me is 100 miles away in Cleveland or Buffalo so I don't do much shopping there but I'll stop into the store if I'm in the area for work or other reasons.

Well, that line from Blue Ox arrived, and I must say it's some truly beautiful looking stuff, with sort of subtle silvery, almost opalescent, highlights that those photos just don't depict at all adequately. It also feels nice in the hand. I guess we'll see how rugged it is, but for now I couldn't be happier:
