I'm gonna bring a boat too - and we go on the one called the Erie Canal? I have heard about that one in my history books - is that one still around?

I also watched the videos on You Tube about the long boats in Europe and saw some sailboats there too. I think I want the to do the Sacrament River Delta and the Mississippi? too.

And yes, those boats also had flares.

Here's a VERY rough route from Florida to my home port of Sackets Harbor, Lake Ontario.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Can someone enlighten me on who would be the flare authority at different points along this route? (obviously the Coast Guard in Lake Ontario and the ocean right?

US Coast Guard or County Marine Police in Lake Ontario; they're both out there, at least in my area. In fact, there's a USCG station right at the mouth of the Genesee River where it dumps into Lake Ontario. Homeland Security is right around the corner.

Don't know about the Hudson River, though I'm sure Catigale could fill that hole, and the Erie and Oswego Canals don't seem to have anyone patrolling, at least not that I recall seeing.

Not that you'd need flares anyway in a canal. If you're in trouble, get out and walk. :P

It's so cute, y'all talking about fancy electric flares and pyrotechnics and stuff...

Here in Borneo a flare gun is extremely illegal - think death penalty.

It comes under the heading of possession of an unlicensed firearm. Big no-no. Even a BB gun will get you the gallows.

As such nobody has flare guns, so nobody has the electric type either and so nobody would have a clue what they were looking at if you fired one anyway. They'd just think it was a firework (which are also illegal but very common and easy to get).

It's a strange place. No real licensing, permits, insurance or coastguard - if your boat floats then go for it, best of luck. But a flare gun?? That's a hanging offence!

Weird.

In anticipation of my 'new' :macx: (which, despite me paying a week ago still isn't 100% confirmed, still waiting for the guy in Japan to complete paperwork) I tried ordering a couple of fire extinguishers.

"Forbidden item"

I guess if my boat is on fire then I don't need flares anyway, so it all works out in the end...

Yup, it's a suburb of Los Angeles - like Cookamonga.

Everything is illegal here in California.

In the real Borneo you can do anything you want.

I dunno, all I know is that everything except breathing is illegal in California and as of next month Newsom said that breathing will also be banned as safety practice to protect people from dying from corona the virus.

Really? Fire extingishers are forbidden? Most places they are required by law on a boat.
