Lowers on a venture 21

Post by Jimboc »

Hi, i just got my 21 & have a question re: my lower sidestays. This rig has 4 sidestays with spreaders. It's a masthead rig with a backstay. My lowers attach to the mast above the spreaders a fair bit. I have them attached to the aft tangs, but it seems they're against the spreaders. The only descriptions i've found have the lowers attached to the mast at the spreaders.
Thanks for any help!

That doesn’t sound right, both from how every sailboat I’ve seen is rigged, and structurally since the lowers counter the spreader compression forces. Terminating them above the spreaders puts bending moment into the mast with no utility.

Maybe someone re-tasked or bought the wrong lower stays and drilled the mast in order to use them.

Got a pic or two?

Not the best pictures but its what i have on hand. The lower stays are attached at the spreaders on my 21, about 3/4 of the at up theres a cable bolted to my mast with a block for my jib. I suspect modifications in the past for mine but if your lowers are attached where my jib block is hing its probably wrong
