Nicro Solar Vent Overhaul - New Motor/Battery for $30

Post by Demos »

I posted this on the MODs website, but I think this is a better place for people to find it.

Like many people, I have Nicro Day/Night Solar vents on my boat and after 4-5 yrs they fail. As they can run 24x7, that's not unexpected. Nicro used to sell an overhaul kit with new batter/motor but no longer offer that and suggested that I buy a new vent. Two Problems with this; size has changed slightly and I don’t want to have to cut/repair more holes in my boat and more importantly, a new vent can be $200+.

After much searching, I was able to find a replacement motor for ~$15 USD(drop-in replacement:).
Conrad Components 198080 Solar motor

But ran into a problem where they do not ship to the USA, but found it on ebay for ~$20 USD, but it can take a few weeks to get here.

I was able to get a new battery from my local Batteries -r-us for ~$5, so for less than $30 I have a what is basically a new fan. Warning - Do not buy the official Nicro/Marinco replacement batteries off Amazon as they are old stock/dead and cost 3x.

Good info.

I've been considering adding one of these vents. Do you find it effective?

I have two on Catigale and get no mold over winter thanks to good venting.

The USA source reports sold out this morning. Mine is still running but the motor armature shaft rattles so I presume is has a lot of wear after 8 years of running during the summer.
