Ahoy, I recently purchased a 26X with a swing keel missing the bottom 16 inches.
Please advise if anyone has a spare for sale.
Alternately I will fiberglass the missing end. If anyone has any experience I would greatly appreciate their input as I have no fiberglass experience. I intenid on using the undamaged portion as a mould. The keel will be laid flat and instead of waxing the existing keel I will use plastic or tin foil or both. Only 1 layer will be used for the initial mould and this will become my inside layer, should it harden before adding the additional two layers which will have two subsequent layers added to the mould or later on the attached first layer. The mold will have 3 inches of resinless fiberglass to attach to the existing keel. Is 3 inches an adequate overlap? Granted the keel will be a bit wider at the overlap and it will slow the boat but I do not intend on winning any races.
I will trim the fore and aft sides of each keel mode side to match the existing keel width. After one side has been bonded the keel will be turned to mould the other side. I am not sure if the two or 3 reinforcing internal ribs are necessary this far down the keel as it may present a challenge with water filling and draining the keel. At the same time I will install the other side of the keel and bond the two halves together.
The board will be placed with the leading edge up and an additional 6 inch wide layer added . I don't think i will add cloth to the trailing edge. The tip will likely be solid fiberglass. A square bottom will be easier to mould than the existing rounded bottom or should I just round off a square end with a saw?
There was lots of resin in the broken section for weight or strength but I am considering glueing in cheaper metal.
Any value to a metal forward edge and bottom or are there disimiliar thermal expansion issues for Revelstoke's BC cold winters, besides complicating the repair.

Hey Snowdancer,
Sorry 'bout keel problems. I bought a new centerboard as well as rudders from ida sailor. I don't know if they're still around, someone else may be able to chime in regarding that. I added weight, about 70lbs to my original centerboard for a mod I never followed through on. It's too heavy to use in a regular cb assembly now. I don't have great fiberglassing chops - but if I were you I wouldn't be afraid to give it a go. I believe you just need temps over the 70's or a controlled heated environment.
When u get a chance, please fill out the rest of your ID so we can figure out who you're local to. Maybe they can help.

Rudder Craft now, but still making boards for Macs and other boats. I remember speaking to Joel (who I think started Ida Sailor) waaay back-when about a folding rudder for my Aquarius.

are HDPE (not fiberglass), though they look just like the ones in the picture. I don't know if they were original or not. I do know they were installed backwards when I got the boat.
