Bow chain plate broken, engine size

Post by egates »

Just purchased a 2000 26X and the chain plate was twisted. Bwyachts sent me a side one instead. Haven't heard back from them yet.
Any other suppliers?
Also need another engine and would like to be able to plane with a full ballast. What size would be right?
Thanks, Eric

Welcome aboard, Eric.

The bow chain plate has a ~1/4 twist, that is by design. My 2001 X would plane with full ballast using a Suzuki 50. I don't remember the prop pitch.

50Hp is OK, most deem to go for a about 60Hp, just check the weight of the engine or you could get caught in the trap of carrying around the lower Hp engine with the weight of the higher Hp motor.

For example my Merc 75Hp is just the 90Hp derated to 75. Which means Im carrying around the extra weight with none of the benefits, a mistake on my behalf but we live and learn.

I would think a 60Hp is about the best mix of Hp and weight

Thank you for your input. BW also got back with me and they will have some made. The bow chain plate is 12 inches and the sides are 8".
I'm thinking a 60 would be good also. Now to figure out which one. Any suggestions?

5 years ago I switched to a new Suzuki 50HP. I am really happy with it, no problems, it's sipping gas, easy to change oils, fuel filter, spar plugs and impeller.

50 will work fine, and a 60 will also. I ran a 50 for 9 years. I now have the Yamaha 70 - same size and almost same weight as the 50s/60s.

One of the most important aspects of choosing a motor; is how good is the local service center for that brand?

I have a 2013 Yamaha 50, and it planes nicely with ballast in. That is how I empty my ballast tank before I go into my slip where I keep my boat full time. I usually don't cruise with ballast unless I have four or more adults aboard or the weather is bad. When I do, my best speed is around 9-10 knots at close to WOT. With just two adults aboard and no ballast, I top out at 14 knots. But I do have a lot of gear and some fresh water and a holding tank for the other stuff. I am happy with my 50. Oh, did I say it is paid for! 8) And, yes, I am a very happy Yamaha owner. :)

forget about the weight factor if u r going 75HP 4 stroke or other !
if u want higher cruising speeds with less fuel consumption u need to go with a large CC Eng Block which will give u a lot more torque at 1/3-1/2 throttle compared too a small CC Bock Eng. with less weight & torque will b running at 3/4 to WOT to try & match same torque there fore using away more fuel & a lot noisier

Also if u get into strong currents or big steep waves that big CC Eng Block with all it,s big Torque is not gonna stall out on u when u need it , when u say where,s the beef when u need it u r gonna git the Bull by the Horns & more :)

small CC eng Blocks with same HP r ok for very light or lightly loaded boats like bass boats or run about,s

Think ! would u try to tow ur boat with a Smart Car !

The number of times I have had to use a BIG handfull of throttle in different situations makes me wonder how I ever managed before with the little 8Hp on my JOG boat, I know different boats cause you to get in different situations due to the way they handle but its mighty good to know when you give her a big handful she will do what you tell her NOW, not when she gets around to it.

I guess I just used to have to plan slightly better and if it all turned to $hit just let it happen as there was nothing I could do anyways, now I go for perfection and if that dont work then plan B is a handful of throttle, normally in reverse
