Tom,

That is a fine example of the 3SW rule.

Some Will
Some Won't
So What :)

Just keep on sailing!

Truer words have never been spoken.

Heading out tonight, in fact. First sail of the season, if I have the time. :) :) :) :)

I feel your pain, I dont like people either, most are not worth liking anyways :D

Which is really funny because Im a qualified college teacher, so I have to be with people

But on topic, I prefer to back my X off the jetty, she handles better backwards at slow speeds Im sure, then just give her a handful of throttle and she spins around and its like steering the queen Mary agai :P

Hmmm, I'm an engineer, so I don't usually have to talk to people. But I'm an outgoing engineer, so I'll look at your shoes when I talk to you, instead of my own. :?

As to docking, I nose it in with partial CB down and one rudder (uncleated, if it's shallow), on a slight angle to the dock, grease it in close, and just give a little burst of reverse with the OB aimed at the dock to suck it in close. Others have mentioned the same thing. I hook on my stern dock line, and motor forward against it at idle to hold it there while I get off and connect a bow line. After that, it's not going anywhere. With the engine idling, I can steer the wheel to adjust how it sits against the dock.

Once two lines are on, I shut it down and finish putting on dock lines, which stay on the dock when I'm out, and are adjusted how I like them - two lines at the bow in a vee, one stern line, and a spring from a bow cleat back to the dock, with the eye splices at the boat cleats (passed under and hooked over the horns). The spring is to relieve the short stern line of the forward part of the load (it's not far off vertical, so the 'leverage' is quite poor), and as a backup to prevent the bow from banging into it if the stern slipped or got loose (or something). Belt and suspenders [braces?]. I even put an unused rubber snubber on that short stern line, as it's too short to provide much cushioning through stretch.

Even with 'crew', I'm sailing and docking solo anyway, so even when I had the 34 footer, I'd still dock solo. In fact, it's a little annoying when folks come over to help, as I have to think about what they should do. I'm too used to doing it myself. Like most things. :|

I am still new at sailing and docking , I do slowly solo and use a loop and boat hook to catch a cleat on the dock, and cleated to the boat fenders out the line will draw the boat right to the dock. The key for me is to go slow.

Hmm, I hate people too!

I wonder if it's a Macgregor thing. Or an engineer thing? Or just a fact of life? I'm working with a buddy on an idea for a clothing line which will be called I.H.P. Each piece will have a little logo with a secret meaning, like "98.5%" (which stands for 98.5% of people are idiots), or a stylized "P.A.I." - self explanatory I hope :D .

Not you guys, of course. You have passed the test by owning a Mac.

This thread has one of the funniest alter-topics I think I've ever read on here. I love reading this forum. :D

My wife and I talk about the same thing all the time. Docking. No, wait, people. We just saw a great little Disney shirt with something like "I hate morning people. But then, I hate mornings. And I hate people too." :P

Boat,

We don't all hate you...not really...:)

I don't usually back into a berth. I would rather bump my bow than my outboard.

Some places it's required.

When I'm dropping my mast for whatever reason in the slip, I back it in so I can reach the top. 8)

Maybe, but I dont get to Monte Carlo that much and I think my poor old X may struggle to be seen amongst all the 100ft plus superyachts.

Of course if she could be seen she would be the prettiest boat there :D

Before I retire back to the good old USA, that is one thing I would love to do....tow to the Med and just have fun for a summer. The only problem is registration. I may have to register my :macm: in Texas to make everyone happy.

Though oddly enough, I look forward to the Mac Rendezvous in Ontario every year (MMOR), and all the dudes and dudettes, but they're all Mac sailors, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

And I like early morning (on a boat), though it's best when not spoiled with people. :|

It's just a conundrum.

Cobourg Marina, Ontario, just before the sun peeked over the horizon, taken while sitting on a wet park bench with a steaming cup of coffee. Even with a wet butt, it was just so peaceful - we were leaving that morning, but I didn't want it to end.

And then all the boaters started waking up and walking around. :P

:D
