Sail boat flips

Post by luis_sailing »

Not sure where to post this. But looks like a nightmare. Not sure what happened here. Maybe they let main down and jib got tangeled and they floated to disaster. What I don't get is why no motor to get away from the pier. Maybe no motor?

It never ceases to amaze me at how many people are experts. Not one comment was from someone who was there. At least there was one claim to know the Capitan. Even they had the intelligence not to guess at a reason. If your not on the boat at the time, the truth is you just don't know what really happened.
Yes as sailors we could all say what we think we would have done, but not being on the boat you still don't know.
All we can really do is view the video, be thankful they survived, and ask ourselves are we prepared to the best of our ability.
They pray, sacrifice the chicken, or what ever you do to cover your !@#$. :o
Off the soap box now, thanks for sharing.

boat is a Martin 24 - skipper named Abbeduto

The skipper is the one on deck screwing around with the jib.

The boat was totally destroyed on the pilings - it had no motor -

The guy at the helm held the tiller to starboard which is why the boat remained in irons all the way to the pier - if the skipper was at the helm he would have naturally dropped off and let the boat get speed downwind before trying to tack.

The skipper is responsible for unsafely navigating a harbor entrance where other traffic is.

My guess is they are referring to the comments at the bottom of the youtube screen. Scroll down. Lot's of 'em.

Scary stuff. Amazing to see the power of the waves. Glad those folks survived okay.

I guess that is my problem, I'm never interested in the commentary. Too often, too many posters making inane comments just to see their name in lights.

Thanks Russ.

There is a second video - the name of the boat is registered at the King Harbor Yacht Club - I looked it up, and a person who saw the video recognized the owner.

PS I would never have "my name in lights" that's why I stick to this web site only - no where else.

No no aft, really - if you had been there with your camera I think we would have had a great opportunity for one of your best paintings to come out of this thing - I mean a boat on the pilings is a pretty big deal in sailboat lore, but the truth about this story is that many of us have already been talking about it and reading the dailies on the sailboat news sites for a couple of days already. See the post:

Re: Tacking in high winds
http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/v ... 10#p323210

There you will see our comments about the accident - me (of course) was the hardest on the crew and I called them names and got really mad at them when I dug into the story. These are the kinds of videos that make it hard for guys to convince their wives to go sailing, and it was all avoidable. The mere fact that all of you are sailing a MAC and not some lightweight Jboat or other flimsy weekend racer tells me already that the average skipper on this site already values safety over speed - I know none of you guys would ever get in a bind like this - so that is why I can relieve myself and pi-ss out expletives about the skipper and his crew in the other post - see, I NEVER talk on any other site but this one - so the skipper is safe from my critique. I would never say those things on a public forum like You Tube - but there was a dork on the helm and a skipper with a head full of rocks in this case.

I was not trying to make you grovel for information, you can catch up with the rest of us on that other post. It's all right there with commentary from your friends so you don't need to read a bunch of crap from strangers.

On this one I think it is best to go here and chat about it. It is a little more civil.

Not any more civil than here. Not one uncivil word typed by anyone here.

They might just as well be discussing how many angels one can fit on the head of a straight pin. Once they agree on an answer, so what. A whole bunch of people stating the obvious.

I'm starting to appear as a carmudgeon :o :D

It would be nice to learn what the facts of this shipwreck are. It could be a learning experience. Anything printed in any papers? Anyone come across any newscasts?

I like this site because there are (usually) no negative personal type comments. Some of us are brand new sailors (me), some may be more bold than others and some are experienced sailors but we cannot all be perfect sailors all the time due to the ever dynamic nature of the weather, seas, human nature and types of vessels we sail. I use incidences (accident in this case) like this as free learning opportunities because it is natural for us to see this vid and immediately think - Hah I wouldn't do that!!! The facts are that it can easily happen (as this would not have been the first time) and because none of us were on board we do not know all the circumstances and what other issues these guys were facing at the time. They obviously made mistakes and we can comment on them (how else do we learn) but mistakes that may very easily befall the most experienced of us. So - I use this as a learning opportunity and hope that when my similar experience happens (fingers, toes and other appendages fully crossed) that I have taken note of the lesson and have the clarity of mind to do the right thing at the right time. Another very important lesson for all of us is to not take safety, preparation and being 'ship shape' all the time too lightly - no matter the conditions. This is a good example of how unforgiving the sea can be. I am very grateful that all these sailors survived relatively intact (pity about the boat) and thank them for the free lesson.

Yeah, I would say all the folks here (except me) are very nice and they do not berate other skippers. The site is well moderated and I get warnings all the time for being too nasty to people on the site. You might get away with being insulting once or twice but after that the moderators are really good at warning you. It's the only place I post because I am an A-Hole and here I feel someone will warn me if I go too far. If there are no rules jack a-ss people like me would get away with saying all kinds of things like they do on the other sites.

You can't do that here.

I have a temper so I get really mad when I see some one make a mistake but after I cool down I finally will start to get some sympathy - it just takes longer for me.

On the other post I called the pilot on that boat a dork - but I don't blame the pilot - I blame the skipper - the owner of the boat was the guy messing with the jib. His name is posted in the PHRF class sheet for the King Harbor Yacht Club regatta series. He made a big mistake by putting out without a motor.

There are old sailors and there are bold sailors, but there are no old, bold, sailors. 8)
