New nautical flags

Post by DaveC426913 »

I have been developing some new nautical flags to supplement the tired old set that has been in-use for centuries.

Did I miss any?

I never run out of wind. I just keep a few cans of these on board.

These are great!

(I'm doing my best to keep this G-rated and respectful.)

I certainly hope you're storing those in a well-ventilated storage area and not in the cabin. Remember, gas settles low.

OK, I looked up what a oenophile is, and I get the red/white thing. And the too much wind. Since I am, alas, not a oenophile, help me with the others. I see no "sierra", but am missing the connection with ice :| , I see a hunk of Swiss cheese floating for "not enough wind" :? And I do not get the "1st mate wants to go home" one. Help us beer drinkers out here!

Herschel, i'm guessing:
The blue square represents an ice cube...(not the sierra flag)...thus no ice.
The going home one is a green (seasick) person with tongue hanging out of mouth.
No wind is a cork floating - they're drinking wine instead of sailing.

How'd I do Dave?

Pretty good viz, but I get the last one as a person's shoulders (the first mate) with a red head (sick-green background) heaving over the side... :?

All joking aside, that's actually an excellent idea. And I say that as a newbie sailor (though longtime "stinkpot mariner") myself. For now, I'd happily fly my "Give me a wide berth, 'cause I might do something stupid" banner, were such a thing available. Isn't it a bit curious that there appears to be no such commonly-understood "learner" signal flag. The closest one I can discern among the International maritime signal flags might be that yellow and blue "D" or "Delta" flag, which, when flown singly, is supposed to indicate, "Keep clear of me; I am maneuvering with difficulty." Of course, there are also also the various "quarantine" flags and more complex multiple-flag combinations available under the expanded International Code of Signals, but I think raising the old Yankee-India-Kilo-Echo-Sierra combo for "Danger! Over-Amorous Radioactive Zombies Aboard!" might be overstating matters just a bit. And who has the time for all that pennant hoisting? No, what's needed is something like a simple "L" or "Learner's plate", such as is used in the UK and many other countries (but not the USA) to indicate a novice driver.

The fact that here in the States we're only now in 2016, after a decade's worth of age-based "phasing-in", getting around to requiring, state-by state, every mariner to demonstrate even the most utterly basic nautical proficiency by passing a free online boating safety course before operating a water craft is sort of remarkable, isn't it? WIth that said, I find it a bit hard to believe that the requirement's being very diligently enforced, at least not within a mile of the ramp where I splash, where one can routinely witness some of the most clueless and life-threatening antics imaginable most any weekend afternoon. It's like Darwin's Water Follies out there...especially those jetskiers tear-assing full-tilt through the no-wake zone, gleefully bashing into each other, capsizing with a half dozen hanging onto a two-seater, not a PFD in sight...A little adult supervision wouldn't hurt. At least run those devil-may-care hijinx off from the immediate ramps area and the little nearby beach where kids are swimming. I'd bet a week's pay that if challenged for them, you'd be about as likely to find a Virginia Boating Safety Course completion card there as a Harvard Law School diploma.

Well, gotta take my Geritol now and go yell at those kids to get off my lawn...

I do think the floating cork is the correct depiction, but not because anyone is drinking wine. Its because you aren't sailing, your bobbin'.

Actually, that is what I saw at first also! And then I showed it to the admiral. Then I had to explain what I saw to the admiral. Then the admiral told me what she saw. Then I was confused and, naturally, agreed with the admiral.
I slept well last night. :)
