Pro tip #37b
If your fenders are on the starboard rail
but they're still TIED to the PORT rail
You may be heeling too much.

Re: Pro tip #37b
Why would anyone sail with fenders hanging off the side?
In So. Cal we referred to this condition as Del Rey Stripes
Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt...

I've heard it described as equivalent to going out in public wearing your undies on the outside of your pants.Freedom77 wrote:Why would anyone sail with fenders hanging off the side?In So. Cal we referred to this condition as Del Rey Stripes

But to answer your question:
Because when it's so windy that she starts heeling while still inside the marina lagoon - and you don't even have any sail up yet, you sort of forget the details.
I don't detach fenders when single-handing; I tuck them up on deck behind the rails. Makes for easy deployment when approaching dock.
But that's not the most egregious break from regimen. It didn't even light up a cigar the whole trip! That's how busy I was!

I have been guilty at times of sailing with my fenders still out, its just sometimes I get so busy with all the details that the fact the fenders are out just escapes me, OR maybe Im just getting ready to dock again, in a few hours, you know they say, be prepared

I always sail with my fenders out when I'm out on the lake. I don't care what anyone thinks. They take up space inside and I am constantly returning to the dock to pick people up or drop them off.

Re: Pro tip #37b
I have three big, fat fenders from a boat I no longer have chained together and tied to the floating dock, so I don't even need fenders on the boat. I have 'normal' sized ones in the cooler compartment, ready to use if needed (restaurant dock, for instance), but it's nice not having fenders anywhere in sight.
