26S swing keel cable

Post by alexdacoolsquid »

My swing keel cable has snapped and I cant seem to find any info online to fix it. I checked out under the boat and it doesn't look like I can access the other end of it without bringing the keel down. Does anyone know a place in the Sacramento area where I can get the thing lifted up?

When I had to replace mine, I hired a tow truck (the big kind that pulls semis) to lift it off the trailer.

But boatyards tend to have hoists, if that is more convenient.

I had no luck with the block and jack method because you have to have it about four feet off the trailer to get to the attachment point. Unless of course you drop the board off the boat entirely, which can be done with a foot or so of clearance.

It would scare the daylights out of me to work under a hoisted boat. I have to replace my cable too, but I'm waiting for warmer water so I can dive under it.

I was comfortable working under the boat because the truck driver was a trained and experienced guy. These things are basically semis with cranes on the back of the tractor. He knew what he was doing, and the equipment was way overkill for a 1500lb boat.

More importantly, after dropping the trailer hitch, blocking the transom, and jacking the front of the trailer, it seemed much safer. No different than a boat hoist.

But if I had a place where I could dive under the boat and do the repair, I would have. And saved $100 in the process.

I recently dropped "Mistress" CB while she was on her trailer.
You lower the front end of the trailer as far as possible, then shore up the rear of the boat using 4 x 4's. Now, begin to raise the front by using the trailer tongue jack stand, lifting as far as it will go. Start shoring up underneath the hull so you can safely place a hydraulic jack under it to lift the boat and continue the process.
Place 4x4's between the boat and trailer for safety.
Using this method, I brought "Mistress" approximately 6inches above her trailer; more than enough room to remove and refit the CB. Image
In this picture, you can see the shoring at the stern of "Mistress" as I was setting her back onto the trailer.
