For anyone thinking the Great Lakes are "just" a lake

Re: Great Lake waves
Hard to tell if those waves are three feet or thirty feet. Could be either. Impressive either way.

Re: Great Lake waves
To be honest, I was more concerned being just a mile east of the outer Apostle islands on Lake Superior for 30 minutes in good weather than I was sailing up the Atlantic coast all day and up to 5 -7 miles from shore in good weather. Superior seemed to change quite quickly whilst we sailed among the islands!dlandersson wrote:For anyone thinking the Great Lakes are "just" a lake![]()

Re: Great Lake waves
I have been working on freighters on the lakes for 16 years, and for a small boat, the short waves on the lakes can be pretty bad, and the weather can change in only a few minutes.
Not saying it is worse or better than the ocean, but sailing on the lakes should not be taken lightly,
I have sailed the seven seas on freighters also and the lakes are serious buissiness.
check the forecast before leaving port.
Great pictures by the way.

Re: Great Lake waves
Great Action photos of small waves. Looking at the picture of the photographer with his camera and the waves behind him, they appear to be very small. I think a Mac could handle them.
Re: Great Lake waves
I always thought it was worth noting that on Lake Michigan, a "Small craft advisory" means boats less than 120 feet long.

I suspect the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald would agree with you

Yep
It,s believed that one of the reported 50 ft waves broke her back in two , that would be one heck of a roller coaster ride on a Mac
