Yes we bought the one in Canada! Anyone know how we go about registering it? Getting USA plates etc. We won't be picking it up until June. We may end up sailing out of Prince Rupert....our plans are still up in the air. I'm an RN and may be getting a travel assignment in Anchorage, Alaska this summer (in that case we may trailer it up to Prince William Sound). I've been told by the owner that we should get the plates and registered before picking it up to avoid hassels at the border. Any thoughts? Also do we end up paying any fees/taxes for bringing it back to the USA? Tasha

Because you are purchasing it in BC the provincial government will try and charge you HST on the boat. You'll have to prove it is being transfered out of BC and Canada to avoid this (we did the same thing as well but also took delivery of the boat in the US and use it exclusively in Alaska. Taking possession in BC through a private sale will delay the tax vampires from finding you but they will find you eventually and you'll have to prove where the boat is located. If you tell them off you will have a very difficult time bringing it back down the the lower 48. I would get your insurance, boat registration (whichever state you'll be registering it in if that's how it works in the US) change the mmsi registration (on your radio if equipped) and get new trailer plates as well. If not registered in Alaska you'll need your registration, proof of purchase to apply for a cruising permit while in AK (free) which comes with some instruction. When in Ak you can them go get a permanent AK registration sticker; we did this once but the cruising permit is just as easy IMO. Hope that helps (and is accurate as its been a few years since we went through the process)
