1982 Mac22 - Hull crack by bunker

Post by drummer1260 »

I'm looking at an abandoned Mac22 from a marina. PO is giving me the boat, including 9HP motor. Inspection revealed an 8" crack in the hull which runs laterally immediately aft of the starboard bunker. Is this a repairable crack or a deal breaker due to the "hole where you pour money..." Marina says they are prohibited from this repair due to it being "structural." Thoughts?

It's fixable. Fairly easily in fact if you aren't too concerned about it looking perfect.
Btw it's not structural, it's only cosmetic
If it were mine I would
Grind away three inches all the way around the crack. Grind down 1/8 inch into the hull surface.
Lay several layers of glass. Build the area up 1/16 inch and use some bondo to smooth the repair into the rest of the surrounding surface. Paint the whole hull with any oil based paint.

Thanks for the assist. I've since conferred with a colleague who stated almost exactly what you stated but added by immersing a couple of 1"x2" boards laterally, or perpendicularly, across the crack inside the hull and apply some long hair fiberglass. He also said to lengthen the bunks. The termination of the bunks, as is, is a soft spot on the hull below storage compartments. His recommendation was to extend the bunks to a lateral stringer about 19"-24" further aft.
