What Is The Number 4 Stamped on My Furler Fittings

Post by FlyboyTR »

I have a CDI II furler for my headsail. Getting ready to do the Johnson Lever conversion and order new genoa. I measured the forestay/furler cable and ended up with 5/32" diameter. I ordered a new Hi-Mod compression toggle fitting for the top; after I cut the cable to the new length. After taking everything apart, the original eye fitting on the top has a 4 stamped on it. The lower end fitting is the male threaded turnbuckle. It also has a 4 stamped on it. What does this number mean?

My mind is wondering if the cable is possibly 4mm ...which is real close and ever so slightly larger than 5/32." I do not want to use the wrong size fitting on the cable. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you not going to use new wire? If so It is so cheap why not. I made up all of my shrouds and backstay but since the forestay needs a rotary crimped on fitting I had ...

....... make it up. If I remeber right it was less than $50 and they will make it to your specs. I have the info...

... making the rigging up and links to what you need in the way of toggles here...

And if you do not want to buy the $250 swager you can get the slow one since you are not going to be doing it every day for a living.

After some searching I got the one above for about $70, not sure what one would cost now.

It worked great, but you can't do the fittings on the forestay if you are going with a furler. I considered using the compression fittings but after reading more about them went with riggingonly.com and a more conventional forestay,

Thanks, Sumner. Considering the compression/toggle fitting is $51.00 (that I now need to return), I will contact them regarding making a new forestay. Thanks.

Hy Sumner, thanks for encouraging me to renew the shrouds. Just bought alle the press tool etc.
The test was not so perfect... Just start to think if you need industrial tools to doo it with 1x19.

But I will give it another try. Like to do it on my own. Nothing to wait if something needs to be replaced!

I formed the loops for the thimbels with a plier. So this looks not be the best.
Maybe the shroud has to be mounted under tension around the thimbel better...?

While researching on the Rigging Only site, I came across the following which answers my original question about the number stamped on my forestay fittings.

"On swage fittings the number or last number stamped on the fitting is the wire diameter in 32nds of an inch, on Norseman's it's etched into the fitting and may be in millimeters or written as a fraction"

OK. So since I have a 4 stamped on mine...it is safe to say I am 4/32nds of an inch...or 1/8".

Sumner, thanks again. I will be calling them shortly.

You can cut the tips off the ends of the thimbles. That will help. Put both crimps on the wire past the thimble and then slide one onto the wire that is looped around and towards the thimble.

Image

Next use a wire clamp like what you see above on the old wire to the left to hold the wire tight below the first crimp (the one closest to the thimble). That will help if you are alone. Then clamp the wire/thimble in a vise with wood on the jaws to help you with a third hand while you slide the first crimp up against the thimble and crimp it and to hold the wire tight against the big end of the thimble.

Image

Remove the wire clamp and slide the second crimp up and crimp it.

Hope that helps and good luck,

Sumner

1/8 th is the normal stock size. I went up to 5/32's and also increased the size of my pins and Johnson lever but I'm anal about some things when I probably don't need to be :( . It is comforting though when you are a long ways from home in bad weather,

This thread is just in time :)

I searched a good bit yesterday. Are the shrouds 5/32 stock, with the forestay being 1/8?

Correct on all counts. The backstay is also 1/8". All are 1x19 SS wire rope.

I saw this comment Flyboy TR and just wanted to confirm you are not intending to shorten the forestay....when installing the johnson lever, the forestay as a whole moves up the mast by relocating the mast hound. Other threads cover this....best of luck.

Yes, my plan was to shorten the forestay and not relocate the mast hound. I did not want to get involved with new side stays, etc, etc. Since I will be ordering a new headsail to match the shortened forestay...that seemed like the easiest solution. I am open to suggestions?

Can I raise the forestay without raising the sidestays?

Yes but I do not recomend it! The stress will change on everything to somthing no sailboat designer ever did or intended to be.

That was how I felt...and the reason why I decided to just shorten the luff by 10". I am hoping it will not have a serious performance decreasing effect on the boat.
