I took my bicycle up to the San Juans last year and while it was fun, I'm getting older. A motor is a good thing! I am leaning toward a good quality gas motor that fits over the back wheel, in place of my bike rack. It needs to fit here, instead of like a conventional motorcycle, so that I can still fold the bike in the middle. The motor would drive the bike directly via a roller on the back tire, or via a belt. The whole thing would weigh around 7 to 8 pounds. I don't have all the DOT rules, but some requirements are: "less than 50cc", "Less than 2 hp", "no gears".

Here's one link:

What a source of information. Rich, did you notice they are selling a Dahon 26" fold up "Mariner" bike with a 50cc engine installed for $700.

Rich,
Would you consider an electric model. Much quieter :) and could be recharded at night while you were in the marina.

Hi Tom. Yes, electric motors are a good choice. They are quiet, powerful, have no emissions and they have less moving parts. Im leaning toward the gas motor because of the extended range and the lighter weight.

lets see.

moped on a mac.......

or a harley on a hunter 46

how big a sailboat/ bike locker is needed to hold a 600 lb bike.....

Guess I better put that in as a design constraint....for the next big boat.....lol
