Those of us sailing north of the 49th parallel have to deal with 50 pound water jugs...

Oh yeah? How much is that in Bordons, Loonies and Pence or in Imperial Quatloos per litre? (spelt in the extra-snooty fashion, au naturellement!)

Seriously though, there was recently a rather well-found-looking 2002 26x near Annapolis, Maryland that was up for sale on the local craigslist for about $15k American (or $5,428,500 Zimbabwean as of about 8 PM Eastern, but a bargain on Prince Edward Island where it's already 9). The ad described and sometimes showed what appeared to be LOTS of rather desirable and seemingly well-executed mods, including some sort of additionally-weighted swing-centerboard that I'd been meaning to look into in this Forum's archives later--after I'd had a bit more experience (read: "any experience") in my own 26X in the drink. I now wonder if adding even a little bit of lead or plutonium or whatever to the bottom of the centerboard might not serve to ameliorate at least some of the listing described in the present thread. Then again, perhaps there may be downsides to such retrofitting such as added difficulty in planing while motoring or unintended additional stress to centerboard mount fittings? Forgive me if the topic's been hashed and rehashed here already, but comments or links to previous definitive discussions of the matter would be gratefully received.

As for that boat, the ad wasn't up very long at all--maybe a couple of weeks--before it was deleted by its author. So, despite winter being a typically predictably poor season for selling any sailboat, our present freakishly mild one so far notwithstanding, it was presumably quickly snapped up by some keen-eyed and lucky jamoke, and my hunch is he got a real bargain.
