Anyone at Lower Keys November 28th till December 9th?

Post by Flightfollowing »

Planning a trip to start in key west around November 28-30th for a week and a half, then store the boat at south dade till I return in early 2016, anyone else going to be in the area interested in meeting up? I'll be prepping alone initially then with wife and 11 year old son. First time boating around the keys.

I'm leaving for the Keys on Dec 16th for 5 weeks as I do every year now. I really enjoy Key West for New Years Eve. It' like Mardi Gras. Last year we drank at sloppy Joes from 3 to midnight and got temporary tattoos applied by a lovely young Russian girl while smoking cigars on a chair on the sidewalk while completely plastered,Chatted up some Mafia guy from New York and danced all night. Next day we went snorkelling at John Pennekam coral reef state park and drank Champagne on the beach and had the best grouper in the world at the fish hut on Hwy 1 a few minutes from the park. Looking forward to another good one this year. It takes 3 and a half days from Quebec City. We drive from dawn to dusk and stay at nice hotels along the way. We snack while we are driving and the real secret is that we check list our tires and boat and trailer every time we stop for gas.

Does Bahia have mooring. If they do what's the price and can you use the slip services? I understand the slips are 2 $ a foot and include everything.

I actually rented one of their camping sites which comes with a free docking. 38 bucks a night for camping and docking of boat so u can't beat that.... I was going to stay at boot key harbor I think it's 26 a day but of course thats just a mooring no electric or anything

Boot Key requires that you have a marine head that can be pumped out. Not sure what grace period they allow you there now but when we stayed there we had to sign a paper saying we would get one installed within 5-7 days (can't remember which). I signed the paper but we left before the time period was up. You might want to call and see what they are doing now.

Depending on wind direction the Gulf side of the Keys can be more protected. The prevailing winds are from the east but if a system is going through the wind direction can clock around to the west and other direction. I liked where we anchored by Fanny Keys...

.... behind Fanny Keys in the shallow water there with a Mac for some protection,
