Back To Mac
Back To Mac
Hi All,
I'm back to Mac!
A few years ago I sold my (heavily modded) Mac 26x and posted my goodbyes. In the intervening years, I've owned several other boats, including WWPs, the rare PowerSailor Macgregor 19, and an ever rarer Europa TS240. Recently I acquired a 26M. So now I'm back to scavenging the Forum / Mods section for ideas. Here is a video of my new-to-me M26...

Welcome Back
Very nice video. I hardly had enough time to boat - let alone drone. It's great to get pics of your boat moving through the water. I'm not ready to fly my phantom over the water yet. I bought someone's highly modified ver 1 with FPV & extra bat compartment in '13. & I still would like to get the new one with the 4K camera
The
looks great. Would love to read your insights, experiences & what lead you back to the Mac.
I'll Let DL chime in as to whether you gotta buy pizza... Again

Nice video.
Be nice to get a similar aerial view of an X - the M cockpit does not seem too big.

Welcome back. Now you need to update your profile. It still lists an X.

Re: Back To Mac
Awesome video.
I'm terrified to fly my quad over water. They sink really fast, ask Doug W about that. And launch and retrieve from the boat, even more daring. I'm impressed at how you pilot both the boat and quad at the same time so well. Very cool POV of a Mac we rarely see.
This is as brave as I've been with mine.

Re: Back To Mac
Great Video! Now I have to go buy a drone, thanks, there goes $1300. I have been thinking of getting a Splash drone, totally waterproof. Rick Moore does some awesome HD videos with one in the BVIs.
You will have a blast with the 26M. Yours looks like it is in great condition. Enjoy!

Re: Back To Mac
Thanks everyone! Double pizzas on me!
RussMT: Nice video! and even nicer Mac 26M + Trailer! Looks like a dual-tandem aluminum? Impressive video footage of drought after-effects.
Retcoastie: Didn't realize my profile still had the X. Will update to M - thanks!
Gazmn: I just had to try over-water flight! There's something special about capturing a sailboat in action. I did practice hand retrieval first, was glad there was hardly any wind. Intentionally didn't fly the genoa this time, to minimize things that could go wrong.
DLandersson: I did see a great aerial shot of an X (with a matching 26-foot whale!) I believe it was a recent post on this forum.
TheSailingRode: I seriously considered the Splash drone, but couldn't find enough reviews to boost confidence of that purchase. If they work as well as advertised, they would be ideal for over-water shots. Please do let us know how it goes if you get one.
General Comments on Why Back To Mac:
The Europa TS240 is a unique pocket cruiser. Though less than 24' in length, it comes with a ton of nice storage space both in the cockpit and inside. In-built diesel engine, pressure water, full standing head, 'pilot-house' or 'deck-saloon', and did I mention huge amounts of well-laid out storage. However it is a very rare boat, built in Poland, and only to be found (in rare instances) around the UK Poole area. I imported mine from the UK. It was probably the only one of its kind in N & S America. When it got 'totaled' by a semi in an over-land accident, I once again started a search for a trailerable pocket cruiser.
Overall you can't beat the Mac for versatility! Its light-weight (easy to transport), great interior volume/living space, and has the 'dual' nature (fast power mode + sail mode). One day after disposing of what remained of the Europa I purchased the 26M! Thoroughly enjoying it so far. My Raymarine EV1 tiller package just arrived so will be working on that in the days ahead (thanks again to all who inspired this mod in this forum!)

Re: Back To Mac
You were back to a Mac with the 19. Did you like it? I may get a 26 when I move south for retirement but for now my 19 suits me just fine.
Re: Back To Mac
NiceAft: Thanks! Currently sailing out of the San Francisco Bay... but have plans for much further out expeditions (San Juans...)
jrcanoe: You are correct - However I owned the Mac 19 briefly only. The one I had was actually modified to have a wheel steering pedestal (similar to Mac 26X/M), in addition to its tiller.
I found it to be much faster than my Mac 26x (was able to hit 24mph, while I don't remember ever being able to exceed 17knots on my Mac 26x). Its significantly smaller inside, much less head room, with a somewhat similar layout to the 26x. I didn't quite take to it, more likely due to the modifications and condition of that particular unit and not the 19 in general. The previous owner was more into fishing/powerboat mode than sailing, and had setup the boat accordingly. One thing I admired about the Mac 19 was how you could disassemble and stow the entire mast and boom inside the boat (vs outside/above).

Re: Back To Mac
Those MAC 19's are really cool - that's one of the neatest boats ever made. Really great starter boat for anyone, and a great boat for experts too who just don't want to mess with a big boat. If I was really old and retired and too weak to handle the 26 I would want the 19. They are very rare and hard to find now and by the time I get that feeble the tattoo 22 should be ready.
The MAC is great - you came back - that's cool. I was going over my old charts of the Santa Barbara Channel planning a trip to Catalina in the next month or so and I caught myself laying out time lines for mooring in the dark and getting around the Isthmus to get to Cat Harbor and looking at all my old log data and by habit I was planning days of travel when it hit me - "hey- you not in a regular sailboat anymore - you can get to the island in less than two hours by motor!"
They have cool Christmas decorations on the island and big Christmas trees in the Casino this time of year and i wanted to see. Heck, If I wanted I could even get there and back and see the stuff all in one day - you just can't do that in a regular sailboat. I can't imagine what could replace the MAC.
