Replacement Rope for Genny

Hi All,

I'm looking to replace the (old and worn) thin Rope that runs up the Genny / Forestry.
Is it possible to do that?... What's the best kind of Rope (or cord) that I can buy to do this?

Are you talking about the luff line that runs inside the sail, or the jib halyard which hoists the sail?

For all running lines I would recommend double braid polyester. Granted dynema is better but also costs a lot more. 5/16 works well for most lines but the size of your blocks may dictate otherwise.

If you have the CDI roller furling for your Genoa then you're looking for 1/4" line that runs through the luff to raise the sail. CDI's manual calls out: "K Halyard Assembly (1/4" x 33') part number 1932"

Yes, if you have a CDI furler, the line needs to have a metal clip near one end to hold it inside the extrusion.

As you are in OZ Neo use 8mm double braid polyester for your heavier lines and 6mm for the lighter ones. I get mine off flea bay by the roll cheaper that way from rope4you. No association just found it to be the least expensive and the ropes not bad.

Ok I found the "CDI Flexible Furler 2" manual. It describes the internal 1/4" (6mm) halyard and shows the metal Ferrule (need to check that in my Luff) ... So where do I get the Ferrule from? ... Is it hard to fit?

Also the steel Forestay is old and looks dark and bent at the top ... Who supplies the steel steel Forestay?

CDI can supply the replacement line, and BWY sells the complete forestay. Two different types (or more) depending on furler/no furler, and perhaps exact vintage of the hull. The forestay for the furler version has the turnbuckle stud swaged onto one end, and the loop with thimble on the other.

Sorry now I can understand you The luff is part of the sail not the furler

The Ferrule is only there to stop the core slipping inside the sheath of the decored part of the "halyard". You could achieve the same result by throwing a couple of stitches in or using a whipping. The Macgregor factory copy of the CDI did not have one and was not stitched or whipped so whether it is needed at all could be debatable, I would just whip it.

The line is the internal halyard. The metal ferrule is there to keep the halyard inside the groove on the front side of the extusion. Any CDI distributor can order one for you. (I'm a CDI distributor). If you want to make your own halyard using some line and a ferrule, you'll need to find a stainless steel ferrule with a diameter of 5.3-5.5 mm to clamp around the replacement line.

The metal wire inside the furler is called a forestay, and any local sailboat rigger can make a replacement for you.

My Halyard is knotted off at the top ... so it only runs up one side of the luff .... I don't think that right??

Kadet, the Halyard looks like 4mm to me?? ... Also, is it 4mm you use in the cup? .... How long? .... If I whip it, can I use the same 4mm for both the Halyard and the Cup?

The Halyard runs down the inside of the extrusion on the opposite of the sail slot for the luff.

The Halyard is 6mm but the portion that runs through the extrusion is decored, i.e only the outer sheath is used . Use whipping twine for whipping

I had the factory CDI found it so cr@p I replaced it with one of these much better.
