Samsung galaxy tab S

Post by Phil M »

Although I regularly use my iPad when I am out sailing, especially as a backup for my electronic navigation, I thought I would buy the new Samsung galaxy tablet from Costco. This is the large one with all the latest bells and whistles. in a nutshell, I would recommend to anyone just to stick with your iPad and not bother with a Samsung Galaxy Tab. My biggest beef is that the expanded memory in the Samsung is very limited as to its use. I did not know that, and did not know about it until I actually purchase the thing and tried to use up some of the memory on the expanded memory card.
:x Samsung has severely restricted what can go on expanded memory. :|

I assume by memory you mean drive storage space (sd card)? If so, a lot of things can be moved and stored there. I have a S5 and my wife has a Tab II, and we both have sd cards set up (I've got 32gb). All my pictures, music, downloads, documents are saved there. If you want, there are ways to move many of the apps and their associated files to the sd card (do a search on the forum.xda-developers.com pages, or do a general web search for moving apps for the S6). I haven't moved my boating programs off yet as I still have plenty of room on the internal storage .....

As opposed to that expanded memory you can move all your stuff to in your iPad,
OH! iPads don't have any expanded memory at all so your point is? :P

Plus Android is completely customisable just Google it :). There are a third party apps like appmgr etc. that can make it easier to move stuff around.

What are you trying to move?

I have over 100 apps on my iPad that has 32gb of internal memory. By contrast, the Samsung has only 16 GB of internal memory, with a 128 GB sd card for external memory. With about 50 apps, the internal memory is almost full with 15 GB used while only 1 GB used on the sdcard. I have put everything I could onto the SD card. :x

I will check out your recommended app for moving things onto the SD card.

I am using a Galaxy Tab 3 7" as my main navigation device, using apps by Navionics and Vexilar for navigation and depth sounding. 16 gb of internal storage is plenty of storage for this purpose. Just like with a normal desktop pc, it is good practice not to overload your device with tons of apps, as it may compromise speed and stability. If you want it to be really reliable, you should limit yourself to install only what you really need.

Yes, you are correct about overloading it. :( But I will need those apps some day. (No I won't)
For serious backup navigation I use the Ipad. It is good to know that I COULD use the Samsung for navigation if I had to do so. Depth sounding? You must be referring to reading the charts in navigation, not actual depth sounding.

Actually no, Vexilar is a WiFi depth sounder for smart phones :)

I will check through the application managers to see if they do what I could get from these instructions.
Thanks for the info. :)

It's a different concept with IPad, where you do have to size it to your needs at time of purchase, but on that note I've never sold an IPad for less than 70% of what I paid for it after 2 years of ownership or more. I do pay less than retail as an Apple "partner" but not that much less. Resell is incredible. I usually upgrade every other model or so, although I think the current model I own will last longer since it's fast/big enough for everything I do.

Kadet,

I have been looking at the Vexilar system as a way to updrage/modify/backup my existing Garmin Nav and Sounding capabilities. I have several Android devices that are GPS enabled and this seems like an easy way to acheive my goals.

I have a few questions regarding your set up.

1. Once I establish the Wi-fi connection from the Vexilar sounder to my Andriod device can that device still access the the internet either by Wi-fi or cellular service?

2. Can the Vexiar and Navionics programs run simulataneously on one device using the Android multi-window mode? I would like to use my 10.1 Tab as the main interface of my system.

3. Which model sounder did you chose, how and where is it mounted, and would you chose the same set up if you had to do it over again?

Thank you,

John

In 20/20 hindsight, I should have just upgraded my Ipad. :(

An app called appmgr made very little difference in my circumstance.
I would have to root my Samsung Galaxy tab S so that I could be a super user in order to have all new applications install on the external SD card. I may yet do that, at the risk of bricking the tablet.

Root is similar to jailbreak. It's tricky business though.
Super User can override all programming. The galaxy is programmed to have all basic apps in the 16 GB memory. Other apps, for example Facebook, also like to install in the basic memory. :x
Bricking is rendering your tablet unusable. Mistakes can be be critical. Not all android systems are identical, even within the same company. What works for one device will not necessarily work for something else.
