Sumner's stack pack ripped off

Post by marcopolo173 »

Hi all,

Interestingly I am thinking about getting a stack pack and looking online for do it yourself vs. purchase and previous findings from other members on this site. In my investigationing, I came across an image on Precision Sail Lofts website which reminded me somewhat of Sumner's home made version, so I checked.

I know my eyes are getting worse, maybe it's just me....but they do look somewhat alike! I just thought this was a bit cheeky to say the least....

I don't recall exactly what Sumner's lazy jack setup looks like, but I would note that the basic concept of zippered sail cover combined with lazy jacks isn't particularly original or proprietary, as far as I know. I have the BWY Mac Pack, and except for some details involving the strap around the mast, it looks pretty much like what's in the posted image.

Hi Chinook,

Image on left hand side is the Precision Sail Loft product, image on the right is Sumner's home made version. Looks like the same photo to me! I agree it's not an IP issue, but at the same time I'd expect the loft to advertise their own product.

I'm struggling with uploading photos, apologies for the link rather than the actual image. I'll work it out...

I get your point now. I thought the pictures were both from Precision Sail. I wonder. Maybe Sumner has a deal worked up with them on use of the photo or design. Then again, maybe you've got the right idea. Maybe Sum will weigh in on the mystery.

That's pretty odd. No question they're the same boat in the same space, just from slightly different angles. But I like the stackpack concept. Maybe some day I'll give it a go.

Lort :?:

League of Resident Theatres :?

lort - Wiktionary
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lort
Wiktionary
lort c (singular definite lorten, plural indefinite lorte). turd (a piece of excrement) ... §Noun[edit]. lort n (singular definite lortet, not used in plural form). crap, sh~t .. :o
No :!: Not Sumner :(

Please enlighten. I have no idea of what a lort is, and you can't possibly mean the Wiktionary explanation.

I have been watching Sumner's posts for a long time. Even if he got the idea for any of his gofasters and lookbetters (look 'em up in your Funk and Wagnall), from somewhere else he made improvements on them. I wish I had one tenth of his genius and talent. Sumner, how's the gunkholing goin'. Fair Winds and Full Sails.Old Salt...

Guy,s cool -off I doubt very much its a ripp-off , most likely Sum looked @ the stack pac,s avail & copied it with , but Modified to his boat or needs , we all find stuff that looks good but needs modified for our boats but is not avail , so we re-design it & make necc. changes to it so as it fits our needs & boats , if u look @ my rigging spreader & shroud mods that I made , there are hundreds of boats with the same rigging or similar design :) its not a copy infringement as per say more a standard rig design or mod per boat
when I made & designed my 4ft double anchor bowsprit I looked @ several designs but where not compatible with the :macm: so I looked @ the best designs & re-de-signed the concept to fit a :macm: with a lot more strength with a deck & hull & superior connection required for :macm: these mods r not avail so u r free to design ur own
