To me, our MacGregor Boats are the VW Combi of the sea. We made efforts to personalize these boats to our individual taste just like the VW Combi owners did. This 26X just done some thing that is out of the norms but the previous owner certainly did put a lot of efforts to make it to his liking or he might had found out he actually over do it.

Here some VW Combis modified like what we did to our boats:

Very nice [pictures.

Out 26's really are very flexible - nice point. I've got a friend who is happy to simply "camp out" in the marina overnight. OTOH, he's seen me sail, so perhaps it makes a lot of sense. :P 8)

These last two posts help explain why I was so attracted to the Mac when I first saw one at the 2001 Seattle Boat Show. In 1972 I bought a used VW camper bus with the small pop top, just like the one in the photo. It worked fine when it was just the wife and I, and one small kid who slept on the floor. When kid number 2 arrived, we needed to mod the bus to sleep 4. I drove over to a wrecking yard near Seattle and bought a Westphalia full length pop top, along with the hammock for suspending over the front bucket seats. I tied it all on top of the VW and hauled it home. Then I had to disassemble and remove the small pop top, chuck up a hack saw blade in my jig saw, and cut a larger hole in the roof of the bus. After a bit of fooling around, I had a nice Westphalia top with a single sleeping cot in the pop top, plus the removable front seat hammock. We camped all over the place in that bus and in 1981, with over 100,000 miles on her, we drove it to the other Washington, Washington DC and back, 8000 miles round trip. One oil change, and one valve adjustment, and she performed flawlessly. Thus was born my love of compact yet versatile vehicles which could go long distances very economically. And just like with the Mac, we were always the smallest camping rig in the campground. One thing though. I've discovered that fiberglass is a lot easier to work with when I need to drill holes or saw bigger openings.

I got the Mac because it was slightly easier to launch than the Combi. I was torn about loosing the poptop though.

I sold My micro-bus when I went into the Army in 72..... I'd hate to think what they are worth now :( I think I paid around $200 for it from the back lot of a Ford dealer  Ron.

LoL yeah. You can't make reason out of crazy

Methinks the tube thingy on the port bow is a fold down boarding ladder.
