That would be a monkey's fist however that is simply a knot.

No I remember now - it's called a "slungshot" - my dad hit me with one once - the knot is called a "monkeys paw" unless your younger - then it's a fist. Monkeys were not classified as primates until much later thus to the old folks they had 'paws' not a fist.Azzarac wrote:That would be a monkey's fist however that is simply a knot.
The "monkey fist" is after my time.

Doesn't count.BOAT wrote:Don't forget the soap on a rope...
Remember, my challenge was for "singular nautical 'ropes' that are made of rope but are not called either a rope, a sheet or a line", and by both name and definition 'soap on a rope' is indeed called a 'rope'.
As to the thrown rope, that ball on the end is called a "Monkey's Fist" and is, as previously noted, just a knot and not an actual free line.

Okay, no soap ropes. And there is probably no point at bringing up any of the lines on a square rig.

Re: Worst part about getting a different boat ...
On the old ships, Once they got the anchor up, they had to cat it. I had to make a special line to lower down and grab one of the anchor flukes to be able to raise the fluke end of the anchor into to the chatting position on my boat.
That line has a loop on the end that I lower down and slip over one the the flukes. It nooses closed behind the palm of the anchor and allows me to hang the fluke end off the bow rail. The anchor then gets further secured with another lashing. I placed a cleat on the bow rail just for this operation. I've been calling that line the "snivelgrapper" since you have to sort of snivel it down there over the arm of the anchor which can be tricky if it's swinging around.
They had a tackle of some sort on the old ships to do this operation with. Maybe Boat can inform us.
Since the challenge was not for made up stuff of course, my suggestion is the Topping Lift.
This is neither a rope or a line. It's just it.
Also, if it become line as soon as it comes aboard, then why is the line stored in a rope locker??

My baby stays are Dynema - looks like a woven fiber, heavier than yarn or string

Re: Worst part about getting a different boat ...
Was reading an article in Sail (IIRC) that was talking about the trend to return to rope shrouds/stays away from cable and wire and rod...kinda "back to the roots" idea. Interesting.
