Adding genny winches

Post by 7 seas »

I recently purchased a 2002 MacGregor 26 X.
I find that the foresail sheet winches & cleats on the cabin top are in a bad location for single-handed sailing.

Has anyone installed secondary genny winches on the aft part of the cockpit coamings, easily accessible from the steering position?

Thanks

as you can see in earliar post I just put these:

It is really perfect singlehanding now and I NEVER had the need of an additional winch!

So I ordered 3, one more for the furler line

bought it: boat for sales, from Bill, great, loving it!!!

I second the ez cleats. They work great. I've never used my winches. We don't have huge sails that can't be managed without. If you must, ease into the wind, tighten and go back. Easy peezy.

Here's where you can buy them.

Concur. EZ cleats are a very simple solution. Get two sets, and use the 2nd set to manage your daggerboard on the starboard cabin top track and your roller furling line on the forward most location on the port gunnel track ahead of the one you use for the genny. This will make daggerboard depth management and foresail size more easily controlled for ideal sailing.

Winches in aft corners
~ Made this mod to enable single handling of the boat. It is a 5 inch winch and a cleat (they don't sell the 5 inch anymore). I had to cut holes in the back and add access panels to bolt down the winches.

No doubt the EZ Cleats are a good solution as are other mods for individual preferences. I successfully single hand the stock boat by sitting just forward or aside of the helm.

Aren't the ez cleats mounted on cars so you can attach them to the genoa track? Mine are.

So how do you mount them on the deck for furler line and dagger board line?
For that, I have a cam cleat for the furler line and a spin lock cleat for the dagger board.

BTW, I love these spin lock cleats. So easy to use single handed. Perfect for halyards and the dagger board line. Pull it straight and the clutch holds the line. Snap it up and it releases.

I third for the EZcleats.

I was considering stern winches - specifically for single-handing - but decided to try these EZ cleats. They are cheaper, maintenance-free and require zero mods. But best of all, they work perfectly!

I am rarely out in any winds so strong that I can't haul the sheets on my jenny by hand. And if I am, it takes 2 minutes to swap the EZcleats out for the standard blocks to lead the sheets up to the winches.

And a fourth for Easy Cleats. They're fast to use too, you can "flick" to a new setting in a hurry, either hardening, or letting out. And they're easy for passengers to use, compared to winches.

Same.

If winds are that strong that I can't sheet the sail in by hand, I have too much sail up.
