Suggestions for removing mounting pin?

There is nothing that secures it in place, other than a bolt and a large washer that holds the starboard side of the pin head in. In the picture I posted above you can see the hole just up and left of the pin head.

I'm assuming he's referring to the threaded hole in this pic, which takes a small bolt that goes through a round washer-like keeper that overlaps the head of the pin.

That makes sense - in that case, there currently should be nothing mechanical holding the pin in other than the actuator connection. If a hammer/drift combo or a puller does not work, especially after soaking with Liquid Wrench or similar, personally, if I already had another pin, I would carefully drill and grind out the existing pin to prevent damage to the mounting lugs. Only would need to drill out each end the thickness of the lugs. I would drill close to the diameter and then grind until thin with a Dremel tool. Then use a hammer and punch to collapse what is left of the pin.

I gotta agree with Toms suggestion to press it out. Give it a try. A couple of sockets and a sturdy C clamp should do it. Don't forget his cautions about shimming if necessary. Please let us know how this ends.

Yes, these extractors look similar to tap's, they screw into the target-stud like a left-handed screw and you can than use a wrench to rotate them: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsea ... +extractor. Available in most hardware stores.

That pin will be either S/S or grade 10 material their is no way u r going to be drilling that out !
As Tom said ur best bet is pressing it out with a big C-Clamp , dealers most likely have a special tool to remove these

A ball joint press or king pin press are made for this. Hammer on the brackets, as hard as you dare, while tightening the C-clamp.
The vibrations will help to break it free.

That retaining screw and washer is the major missing piece of the puzzle because it means that you are dealing with a fully floating wrist pin (or gudgeon). So now it's clear that the piece is held in place by the pressure exerted by the expanding corrosion, squeezing against the plastic bushings and creating the interference. So it's all down hill from here!

If you don't have luck with the constant clamping force suggested, or find it's still too much force for your liking, or not enough to do the job, then heat from your propane torch will soften the three plastic bushings up (you really don't need to get to their melting temperature, just enough to soften them a bit, but you now have something to gauge your temperature with; if the plastic does melt, you will still be at a low enough temperature to not damage any of the metals) while the clamps apply steady pressure.

Note this is an exception to the rule, but in this case it IS permissable to apply heat to the pin itself. Combined with the constant clamping force it should then come out fairly easily.

Then clean off the guck, give it a shot of a little matching spray paint to make it “looka nice”, and reassemble. Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. After evening 3, no luck yet. I do have a new pin and bushings so not worried about destroying the existing pieces.

As suggested above, I did get a jaw lever today (like this one http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... =2044_0_0_. But because of the position and spacing the best I could do was attach one arm. When I started tightening it, because i couldn't get it straight on due to spacing, lack of attachment points, etc, the shaft of the lever started to bend. So no go on that one.

So next up: the bolt extractor sounds like an idea, and I have an impact wrench which may help to break it loose. Although that pin is incredibly strong, and will be a challenge to drill the pilot hole.

Also may try the c-clamp / heat option if that doesn't work.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately (kind of) I am relaunching the boat for a month so the next round will have to wait. But I will update after the next go, I am sure you all are on pins and needles. It will also give me some time to find some new creative curse word combinations!

Another option, cut off the flange of the bushing on the small side of the pin and then pound or push thru - the bushing binding to the pin will not be an issue then.
