Get out of the water and parked (26D)?

Post by peterix »

Hello,

I have the following challenge and need some advice:

I sail on a lake were I have a home with access to the lake (dock and little ramp) but is impossible to bring the trailer to my ramp (the access is by stairs) so I launched the boat in a public ramp and left the boat in the dock during winter.

The idea is to do "something" to be able to get out the water the boat in my ramp. Some kind of light trailer who I can disassemble to carry it (by hand by the stairs) and assembly in my ramp.

The support will not be use for towing but will stand the boat all the winter.

Someone has the same problem? or better, the solution :)

Thanks

Do you need a trailer?

You could use a fixed electric winch (like strapped to a tree) to simply haule the boat out of the water and onto a muddy shore. If your lake level doesn't move and the ground is soft, this should be fine--like beaching.

Another option would be to build a lumber and carpeted set of rails to a fixed boat-bunk at the shoreline that would extend into the water. You'll snub the boat up to the rails, hook up a winch, and pull the boat out of the water up onto the bunks. If I'm not mistaken the goal is just to get the boat out of the freezing water, correct?

Just a couple of thoughts. DaveB has some kind of boat-lift at his house in Florida I believe--He may be of some assistance.

Thanks, ans yes the goal is get the boat out the water during winter, The trailer is the easy solution except I need to disassemble it to (by parts) take it to my ramp (so I need a full disassemble kind-of trailer, not only the axis). About beaching the level of the lake can be 1 meter so I thing can't be possible.

May be a solution is the rails but a moving ones (with wheels), using a winch to put the boat on the rails, and after using the winch to pull out the rails. (If the rails where fixed, I think I will need 20mt of rails)

I am perfectly serious suggesting this.

Could you possible launch the boat attached to the trailer, motor to your ramp with trailer attached, and then pull out at your ramp?

That is, deliver your trailer by water to your ramp?

Yes! I know someone do this with motorboats but with a sail? mmm not sure, without the daggerboard in the water is very difficult to steer, and also with a trailer attached.. uff.

Just drop the daggerboard onto the trailer (so its as far out as possible) and go as fast as the outboard will allow. It'll either work, or you'll be a candidate for a book about strange boating accidents...

Or just tow the sailboat and trailer with a motor dinghy or neighbor's boat.

Pick a day the lake is like glass and don't forget to use your trailer turn signals on the water.

I think attaching the trailer to the boat will work. Just find a calm day and I think you will be surprised at how well the trailer will work as a keel. Just keep it slow. There will be a lot of pressure on the trailer and that pressure will be translated to the boat by the straps. And at speed when things happen they happen fast. A friend in a small boat along would be a great way to handle unforeseen problems but will probably not be used. Well except as a photographer. And the most important part would be to post the video and let us know where.

Yes :!: If you do this PLEASE :!: video it and post for us.

BTW; You cannot lower the dagger board when on the trailer with the D boat. There is a crossmember in the way.

Also remember "slow is pro"

Sorry but I'll be a little conservative about this

The fact is I need the actual trailer, so If a trailer is the solution I need a new one an in this case I can do a disassemble kind of...

Thinking simple I will start trying with a base of wooden board and a winch, I think the boat can slide... Anyway I need to wait for spring (here) to start testing.

There's a large-ish cabin cruiser here in the Erie Canal, parked in a boat house, sitting on a dolly with pneumatic tires to carry it up the dirt ramp into the boat house via fixed winch. If you can fabricate, perhaps such a simple 4-wheel dolly would work for you. Fat sand tires on a couple of axles, a winch, but that requires design/build, which may not be your cup of tea.

I think that will be the final solution, this look nice:

Nasa style :) , something like that can be but longer.
