25 HP motor speed
25 HP motor speed
I am considering purchasing a 2000 X with a 25 hp 2 stroke mercury motor. What kind of speed can I expect with this engine?
I like the motors
I have no experience with a 25hp 2 stroke, but, my best guess is around 12 mph with the lowest pitch prop made for that motor, or around 9 mph with the default prop which is probably a 13 pitch meant to push a jon boat 25mph.
..
Fun on the web pages: The MercuryMarine web page prop selector (http://www.mercurymarine.com/prop_selector) says that the 25hp motor's maximum load is a 1500 lb. boat going 25mph with a theoretical pitch of 12.8. The range of prop recommendations is 11.7 to 13.4 pitch, all say the top speed is around 25mph. Now put that motor behind a 4000 lb. Mac26 and really got slow.
..
http://www.solas.com.au has a atainless new saturn prop in 10.75 inch diameter and 10 pitch that would be a good choice.
..
I like to think about outboards and props, anybody know where I can make extra money while having this fun?

I ran a Nissan 25 2 stroke the first year on my 2001 X. Robert's numbers are real close to what I did. With ballast, I could do about 8-9 mph, just enough to dump the ballast. Afterwards, the speed would increase to about 11-12 mph and it would suck gas at WOT. The last few hundred rpms didn't seem to make much difference in speed.
The good side-- it was enough hp to keep control in adverse conditions in open water, but left something to be desired when docking in the same conditions.
