Line led aft: how do you get the main down?
Line led aft: how do you get the main down?
I am in the process of running lines aft to the cockpit. Ive only put the first pulley on the cabin roof, gave it a pull and my newly slugged sail shot up like greased lightning. I let the halyard go and the main only dropped 3' and it was no easier to drag the sail down with slugs vs the old rope. My plan is to abandoned the hope of moving my single line reefing back to the spin lock at the cockpit and leave it at the mast base and use the deck pulley I had planned for it, as some sort of a downhaul led to the the same spinlock as the main halyard. Anyone have another suggestion?

Getting the sail down and tied up still requires going on deck. So lines led aft is not perfect.
However, Jim King found a great solution that I'm going to adopt.
Here's a thread about it.

Here he demonstrates the looped main halyard that also lowers the main.

How about this...put the boat into the wind, climb up on the cabin roof and pull the mainsail down.
Plan B - get a FR for your main.

I solved it with a "Down-Haul" (my term). Not a continuous loop like Jim King's but it works quite well.
I added three clutches. First Picture shows them. Inside white line is the daggerboard. Middle flecked line is my mainsail down-haul. Blue line on the right side is my mainsail halyard.
Second picture shows the blue halyard and flecked down haul runs to a double cheek block to blocks at the base of the mast and up to the same point at the top of the sail where the main halyard connects. I just use a bowline to connect it.
I had to add the BWY mast gate. With this set up, I rarely have to go up to the mast for sail handling.
