UPDATE OF MEAD MADNESS SAIL '14
• PERMIT RECEIVED APRIL 18 AFTER NEGOTIATION WITH LMNRA TO ACCEPTANCE PROVISION OF:
4. Proof of $300,000 Liability Boat Insurance with United States of America named as also insured.
AS OPPOSITES TO ORIGINAL REQUIREMENT FOR AN UMBRELLA "LAS VEGAS BAY MACGREGOR ASSOCIATION" LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR EVENTS.
Estimate for such an umbrella liability insurance to be $1700 per year. With LVBMA not collecting dues from associates sailboat skipper for the two annual reunions, which include "pick-up'" races / sailing rallies using existing shore landmarks / navigation buoys, and lake island turning marks, it was not a viable option.

• ONE BOAT SHOWED UP FOR THE RACE AND WAS GIVEN SS LVBMA FOUNDERS' DAY WINNERS COFFEE CUPS BY DEFAULT. PREREGISTERED SAILBOATS OPTED OUT EXCEPT TWO.

• PLAN TO COORDINATE FALL FLOTILLA SAIL AND SAILING RALLY OCT. 10 TO 17 WITH REMAINING PERMIT. HOWEVER, WILL DISSOLVE LAS VEGAS BAY MACGREGOR ASSOCIATION AND ALL INTERNET CONNECTIONS BY YEAR END.

All,

Not sure what to make of this result as I skipped the event, first time in many years. It had become a 'must do' for me and a bunch of darn good sailors. I didn't skip because of the red tape and the hint of fees, though I have never paid a dime to the NPS before. Never had a problem with a small donation to reimburse Kimo for a small part of the work he put into the planning. I think this result is like the black cloud hanging over the West in terms of drought. I still think it's our government and we have the power to make it work for us. Meanwhile it sounds like the cost of living is moving the middleclass sailor out of the water.

The Nevada Yacht Club is a proper yacht club with their own IRS ID number which they can put on the application; is a due paying membership with an account to pay for Special Use Permits; and is an affiliate with a national Yacht Club association providing a liability insurance umbrella for their member events. As the Las Vegas Bay Macgegor Association (LVBMA) is only a group trailer-able sailboat sailors from the surrounding states without membership and dues, I had to provide my personal SSN and promise to sight personal liability boat insurance as a function of the "organizer" of the "Get Together" of trailer-able sailboat sailors for the last 16 years. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area sight concerns for the safety and NPS liability of sailboat races and other timed marine events as the need to enforce their long standing requirement for such events. This would include the "Fun" LVBMA Founders' Day Cup Race (with a "Rabbit Start" and rounding islands on the lake as course markers) and the Fall Sailing Rally (using existing Navigation Buoys and Markers). After submitting my application for the two marine events for 2014 (was Grandfathered from the need of a non-refundable $100 application review fee) and paying the required $50 fee's (from donations from regulars to the events, as LVBMA has no dues supported membership account) for Special Use Permits for the two events. Due to the lack of attendance at the 2014 Mead Madness LVBMA Founders' Day Cup race and Fall event cancellation due to sudden reduction of water at the usual Callville Bay Marina ramp at Lake Mead; it was decided to discontinue all FUTURE "Timed Marine Events" as part of the two LVBMA's Get Together's in the Spring and Fall.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area Park Rangers I dealt with were very helpful in trying to get through the arcane application system and requirements. A system I believe is left over from the corporate sponsored hydro boat races that were held on Lake Mead in the 1940's. Also, I believe the National Part Services budget was cut by the sequester budget reduction for discretionary Government expense, and this is an existing method for new revenue to offset the cut. Again this is my opinion and has been denied by LMNRA representative. BTW fees at the LMNRA toll booths are going to be raised in 2015  .

Why dontcha know all you have to do is form a corporation and hire a lobbyist to spread some cash around the Hill and you could do whatever you want at Mead, and then deduct everything on your incometaxes.

Jimmy Hoffa is dead and never was a member of our Las Vegas Bay Macgregor Association when Caeasr's Palace here in Las Vegas was built. As Bobby Dylan sings "The Times they are changing...".

Being Irish American (mother born in Ireland  ), giving it another go, without the Timed Marine Events or Distribution of Beverages and Food by LVBMA. See LVBMA schedule for 2015 on this page.
