John,

Didn't you do something similar on your 19 :?:

It looks like the Vise-Grips are holding laminating together. What is the hatchway made of :?:

Hi Ray
Yes I did do the same mod on my :mac19: It was a one peice section due to being smaller , I used plexi-glass
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j95/m ... 010003.jpg

I have overlapped the top edge of the bottom section by 1/2" so as to support the joint between the top & bottom sections I may also run another strip across the top of the top section for strength if it needs it will know once I install the opening port to the top section it maybe stifffen it up enough

I like your idea John. I've been wanting to do something like that but I'm looking for that smoked plexiglass, all I could find is clear.

My Hunter had a 4-section board made of gray Lexan or Plexi. Thick, too, like 1/4" or so. But that gets rather pricey in that thickness, and for the area needed, or I'd do it with this boat. :P

The PO made bi-fold doors from gray plexi, and I used them for the MMOR trip last year, and I have to say, it's rather nice having natural light coming down the companionway with them closed. 8) I'm thinking I'll fix up what he did and use it some more.

you got a picture of those bi fold doors tom?
would love to see them!
been wanting to do some kind of folding door system- easy in and out- and to keep the heat in!

been thinking maybe something inside the companionway "frame"- so that i can still use the drop in boards.

Here ya go.

This was a photo taken by the PO for selling the boat. I don't think I have any with them closed. He used a thin strip of Plexi to thichen the edges for the hinges, and for the fixed portion screwed to the companionway board track. Plexi isn't that strong, and it's cracked at many screw holes, but I think I can do something a little different and still use the main panels.

The way it's mounted, I can insert the original board with this bifold system in place. They're kind of pointy and in the way when open, so I sail with them shut.

In the end, I think the upsides outweigh the downsides, so I'll probably see what I can do about making them better, as it's nice to be able to just open and close them rather then dealing with the hatch board. But I can also stick in the hatch board for greater security if needed (though a crow bar would be through it in two seconds).

I like the overlap idea for both strength and to help keep rain out. Looks Good!

Well here she is installed & I am very pleased with the finished results ,
here is the bottom section in place this section can be left in place & is very easy to step over when exiting or entering the cabin & because the top of it is double framed with 2"X 3/16" alum flat bar it makes a great back rest while sitting there

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab1/ ... 2cbb37.jpg

the top section in place with the screened opening portlight, the portlight allows for ventilation & also allows for communication between persons in the cabin & cockpit when the cabin is closed up , also a nice safety factor when in rough water if people r down in the closed cabin they can see whats going on in the cockpit & can wave bye, bye to the Skipper as he is washed over board ! :o

viewed from the inside would be alot nicer view if the boat was outside & on the water
here the portlight is open
