Water Leak experts!!

Post by Matt19020 »

I have a 2007 Mac And have a MAJOR water leak I can not figure out. I am prepping the boat for this season and I have a major water leak. whenever it rains I get about a 32+ ounces puddled up around the head area. I spent 4 hours on Saturday with a hose on the windows the stanchions and deck fittings...after all that I got a slight trickle coming down the interior walls. It is not from the head plumbing because I had pink anti freeze in it and this liquid is clear. Has anyone had leaks like this? See Blue area in Pic

Considering the fact that the tape starts up the side of the hull in the carpet area I suspect you have a leak from the rub-rail. Check the outside for gaps check the entire rail. If you get lots of good sun on the rub rail, you will see light from under the clam shell from the inside where you have a problem. Or you could have someone use a flashlight at night.

Have you checked the chain plates? This is a common leak area and, indeed, your arrows on the photo nearly point directly to them.

+1 on chainplates...new to Macs, but they are a common source of leaks on sailboats. :x

that seems to lead logically to the chainplates- i hope you have found the source- i know how frustrating it can be..
in the same vein...so to speak...i am getting water coming out of the hole in the rear berth roof /liner where the cables come from the pedestal
apparently the pedestal has a lip so even if water gets in the pedestal it will get caught on the lip.
i think it might be coming down the liner, maybe from the traveller thru bolts- just dont know- only in good rain though

Last year replacing the db I noticed the top deck cracking around the trunk of the db, then this year doing the bottom paint I noticed the same thing on the bottom. This may also be a place to try. I forced as much 5200 in on both ends to fill cracks and hopefully seal it up.

In this case of course the crack at the bottom of the DB would not be the OP's leak source (when raining). But cracks where the DB trunk meets the hull on the outside!!! Yipes. I thought that was a very robust area of the boat, and I'd worry about that when the boat's in the water (movement). Could that be from freezing, running hard aground or something? What year is yours, Bob?

Has anybody else seen such a thing?

BTW (and more on topic :o ) - When new,I had a leak above the head (not far from where drawn on the picture) where the dealer-installed pumpout fitting met the deck. I removed and sealed the fitting to the deck properly, and no leak since.

I had a leak same place as you on the S/B side it was a pin hole in the gellcoat just right of the mast light plug on the cabin roof I took out the floatation in the mast bulkhead area looked up inside & sure enough their it was light shining through a tiny wee pin hole the size of a very small needle  fixed that one last spring
Then last fall I had a leak same place as ur port side leak only it was on the S/B side in the head turned out to be the window above the head I pushed the window up & sure enough again I could see day light  I used black duct tape to seal the window until I put the boat away in my shop for the winter , the window is now out, the hole has been closed over with duct tape cardboard untill I decide whether I'm going to fill it in with a black plastic filler board the window opening is approx 17" X 17 1/4" & slightly ovalled in the bottom corner , the inside liner opening is 14" W X 15 1/4" H which is ur actual window veiwing size , I was looking @ black framed smoked glass opening hatches that would fit inside that 14x15 1/4 " opening by just cutting out the black filler board thus replacing the window all together  :) the price of the hatches is whats holding up this mod :o & trying to pry open my Scottish Heritage to allow me to open up my wee spurn "purse" & let the cash flow  outward :? 500-600$ :o , If I can catch a sale price somewhere & get hatches as close as possible to that size

I found this on another discussion board and Think I may try it: (Using a leaf blower) I will post results and technique if it works...

"an alternate way of finding leaks is by blowing AIR pressure into the boat with a big industrial type fan (sealing all around it) then using a soapy water mixture all over the boat and watching where the bubbles form. That's where your leaks will be."

2006. Just appears to be some of the gel coat as theres a lot of it in those locations, maybe cracks wasn't the proper description. Not from freezing as the boat is put away dry. Not overly worried about it though. I'm gonna see how the 5200 looks after a year in the water then maybe consider re-glassing if needs be.
