Thoughts on 1987 26" Macgregor

I'd appreciate any (experienced/knowledgeable) thoughts on this boat. 8)

The price may be right and they are supposed to sail pretty well. :)

Looks nice - can't beat it for the money! Should be interesting to watch the bidding for the next two days. Just don't tell Dave!

That boat is a Mac 26D. It's the fastest sailing of the smaller Macs made, and has almost exactly the same layout as the 2003 Mac 26M, which was based on its design.

If I were to buy an older Mac, this would be it. The boat also appears to be in great condition, and the trailer looks fantastic for its age. Must not have been used much or it was well cared for--my three year old trailer has more rust on the tongue.

I'd bid $5000 for it if I were in the market. I happen to be going to Long Beach tomorrow and could stop by to survey it if people were interested.

on edit: The reason the trailer is in good condition is told by the reg stickers: It was registered to Lake County, which is all freshwater lakes in central CA.

It appears to be a fantastic deal unless it gets bid out of control. I'd estimate its value at $5000 +/- $1000 depending on the unknown condition of sails.

Just checked it out. Nice!

If the HIN is correct, that is a 1988 model, not 1987.

Actually, it also could be considered to be a 1989 model, since it was manufactured in the second half of 1988 (July, if I'm reading it correctly?). My knowledge on this might be outdated (but applicable to this time period), but at one time, recreational vehicles, snowmobiles, boats, were considerd to be the next year's model if they were made in the second half of the year.

But shhhh, keep it under your hat because that gives you a slight edge over other bidders who are not aware of it*. :D 8)

It also does say "salt water" in the ad, whatever that means.

*And who also don't research and arrive at this forum.

You are safe for the moment. I have my hands full with the 23 Kells right now.... :D

Besides it is in Cali and that is a bit far for me.

I also prefer Craigslist over Ebay. Not a big fan of "Bidding" I like to be able to walk up to the boat/owner and wave some cash in front of their nose while I negotiate the price DOWN to what I want to pay 8) 8)

Keep an eye on it....it looks like a good deal. I wouldn't want to pay more than $3k for it though, but thats me

Cheers

You raise a good point. I was actually hoping it was a "swing keel" - Daggerboard being my second choice. I understand 1987 was the last year 26D's were produced. Not so? :o

I'm guessing it will go for 4700 Usd, which would be a good deal for that smoker

That engine is worth 1000 easily.

On edit...whole package sold for 2972 bid on eBay....

Unfortunately the other boat I need to look had to reschedule to Monday, and I can't take the time to go up to LA twice so I'm going to have to apologize for that.

From the photos the boat looks to be in great shape and well cared for. With the daggerboard boats there's very little that can go wrong that isn't easily repaired. The swing keel is the "death knell" of earlier Macs, being difficult to replace or repair. But a daggerboard is trivial even if it's completely missing.

From the photos, I'd put a bid for $3000 and see what happens. There's also a small honda generator sitting on the stern that's likely worth a few hundred bucks, and there are either three or four sails bagged in the V-berth. With shipping You'd be $5000 in.

I will definitely pick it up for you if you win.

I paid 3500 for my rocket 89 with no motor, worse cushions, a bent mast and unmodified rudder. Now with a solid racing history and 4 years of fun, I wouldn't sell for less than 6500. I see it's now sold, who got it?

Those crazy genoa fairleads are worth a couple hundred new. :o
