LOOKING FOR PARTNERS TO BUY CHEAP SAILBOAT IN THE KEYS
Hi guys,
Anyone interested in buying a 2, 3 thousand $ trailer sailer in the Keys this winter? I don,t think I will be able to get my boat down to the Keys this Xmas( The Buick has been scraped and my new Buick can't haul a 26M), but I am looking at buying a trailer sailor to keep down there when I need it. We could partner 3 guys at 1'000$ each and get a sailboat which we could keep in the Keys. We could sell it when we want or keep it in storage when not in use. This would be sort of a timeshare for 3 guys who have 1,000$ to loose. I've got 1'000$ and need the boat at least 1 week between December 20th and January 8th.

Theres a 19 foot Mcgregor for sail for 5,000$ on 1 of theses sites.

Buying the boat is only the first step. Where to store it?

Actually, a nice idea. What would be the ongoing costs?

Re: LOOKING FOR PARTNERS TO BUY CHEAP SAILBOAT IN THE KEYS
On going costs :
0$ to 200$ a month to keep the boat on its trailer in a reasonably secure area. 500$ a year for insurance, and the rest is maintenance. I personally would want to sell the boat in the spring and buy another one every year or two. The costs should be about 85$ a month for 3 owners on a 3000$ boat. If we had problems with the boat we would just sell it or give it to charity. I'm looking for 2 guys ,who have 1000$ to throw away and the ability to spend 100$ a month to maintain the boat.
The way I see it is that I 'll get my moneys worth if I spend 4 weeks on the boat 2 years in a row. I'd like to do it with at least one guy from Florida for registration reasons and I dont care if someone else owns the boat outright, I'm ready to invest 1,000$ within the next 4 weeks to help somebody buy a boat! I'm not rich but I can blow a grand on a project like for sure this.

I kind of doubt you'll find a boat that's ready to go in the <$6,000 price range. There's usually quite a bit of repair and cleaning to be done there.
I've thought about doing this, but I'd need a bigger boat to go that far and it would have to be ready without much maintenance to do.
If you're not set on Florida, you can rent my boat in San Diego and stay on a boat that's truly ready to go.

Re: LOOKING FOR PARTNERS TO BUY CHEAP SAILBOAT IN THE KEYS
I agree with Mastreb.
Not that I'd want to rain on this parade, because this is a tempting plan, but one should also consider the downside. Would I want to rent a 6 thousand dollar boat for a couple of weeks of basic fun in Florida? "Basic," because the boat will be just that: most likely, smaller than a Mac and lacking some of its conveniences along with its quirks.
I like my boat because all of the adjustments I have made over the years. Granted, it's not all the way up the snuff (which only adds to the yearly projects I take great pleasure to dream about before the painful, elbow grease phase which even so has its own charm) but such as it is, it's how I want it to be. Those personalized improvements will have to be traded against the inconvenience of trailering the boat to Folrida. Add to that the hassle of worrying about the boat while I don't use it.
Besides, when I use it and I know that I am responsible for 2/3 of the investment, towards the other owners.... that'll add to the pucker factor.
I'd rather bite the bullet and trailer mine for three days.
That doesn't mean that this plan wouldn't work for other people

You could always try https://boatbound.co ... Rent from someone that uses and maintains their boat...

I hate to rain on your parade also but I would think for the price of the boat and yearly upkeep, you could bareboat charter a fairly nice boat for a week or two.

Beh. They are giving away perfectly fine boats down here. Catalina 25, dieform wire rigging, no motor, good sails, 1500 bucks.

Re: LOOKING FOR PARTNERS TO BUY CHEAP SAILBOAT IN THE KEYS
I have been pm(ed) by an interested person who has 1'000$ to burn. Just need one more mate and it's Xmas and New Year in Key Largo in 4 weeks.
We are looking at that 1,700$ boat in Key Largo that comes with 3 days at a resort. At 1,000$ a piece it includes insurance and storage for 6 months....Then we sell it for 500$ and 3 days at that same resort.
