I never noticed....you are right

Float test on the little boat went well!

There are 4 small screw holes we made to patch, and a small part near the keel to get a patch (all pinholes)

however the combined 5 screw sized holes ended up filling the boat with about 2 inches of water while I Re-carpeted the trailer bunks right quick...

About to patch them up today and then she goes on Craigslist so I can get back to work on the Venture23

Hard to believe this is the same boat no? it's only been 5 days since I bought it...

Ahoy Mate,

I moderate a Yahoo group for the Newport 16, Neptune 16, Gloucester 16, and Lockley Newport 16 sailboats

http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/newp ... iling/info

and have been following your blog on the boat you bought listed as a Nautica 16. In looking at your photos my best guess is you have an Enterprise Newport 16 built by Dick Lindsey in Florida. He built many of the Newport yachts. I'm not sure it is an Enterprise and so far we have only a sales ad from 1970 but no actual photos of one. Would you mind posting photos of the nameplate inside the transom which I'm guessing would have the name of the builder in addition to Newport 16. Also if you wouldn't mind some interior photos and pictures of the keel at least partway down. Can you tell if it is cast iron or an aluminum plate with lead attached to the bottom.?

When you get ready to sell let me know and I'll post it to our site. Thanks, Burt

Thanks for the photos. You helped solve the riddle except for the round portlights. My guess is the original windows were glassed in and replaced with your current setup. Any chance of getting closeup photos of them inside and out? I have posted your Craigslist ad to our bulletin board. Hope it helps you in your sale.

Here is a history of the Newport 16 so you can see where the Award boats fit in.

"C. William Lapworth (of Cal 40 fame) originally designed her in the mid-sixties for Robert Dorris as a daysailer that would sell against the Lido 14 in southern California. She was called the COLUMBIA 15 back then, and had no cuddy. Dorris sold the molds to Dick Lindsey of Lindsey Plastics who asked Lapworth to add a cabin and renamed the boat the NEWPORT 16 (at the time Lindsey Plastics was building the Newport 20,27,30 and 41). The Newport 16 name stuck, even though the molds changed hands a few times after that. The molds were bought by Enterprise Yachts of FL (ENTERPRISE NEWPORT 16), Award Boats of Melbourne, FL (AWARD NEWPORT 16) and then later came into the hands of Newport Boats . In 1976 Newport Boats was purchased by Lockley Manufacturing and became Lockley Newport Boats (LOCKLEY NEWPORT 16). In 1981 the molds were sold to Gloucester Yachts where it became the GLOUCESTER 16.

Newport Boats, of California, in existence at least as early as 1964, was a builder of fiberglass dinghies and daysailers. They also had a factory in Gloucester, VA (Mobjack Mfg.). The Company was purchased first by Browning Arms in 1965, then by Elgin National Industries who had also purchased Lindsey Plastics and Enterprise Yachts. After Elgin bought Lindsey Plastics Dick Lindsey started Lindsey Yachts in Miami and continued to offer the LINDSEY NEWPORT 16.

Capital Yachts Corporation was founded in 1971 when Jon Williams and Bill Smith bought the tooling of the Newport Fleet from Elgin National Industries. Together, with the aid of designers Gary Mull and Cuthbertson & Cassian, they formed a new and updated fleet of Newport sailboats which were manufactured at their plant in Harbor City, California. Capital Yachts modified the Newport 16 by enlarging the cabin and named it the CAPITAL NEPTUNE 16.

So I got an interesting reply to my CL ad this week

This fellow wants to know if I will trade him even for this 1977 25 ft O'Day with a 1987 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke (you can see it is running in the photos)

Image

It doesn't have a trailer, and its 2 hours east of me at the upper coast of NC

Before you say it's a Nigerian e-mail scam I would point out that I have talked to him a bit via email, and he was going to come today to see mine but moved it to tomorrow morning, and he has a local phone # and says he lives in Raleigh near me....he was in Louisburg today (above me) but didn't have time to stop by today. he seems pretty serious, and in this economy paying marina/slip fees for a boat he has no time to use as he states is expensive. he was'nt counting on meeting someone like me :D who just happens to have a trailer large enough to haul that boat out and bring it home !! The trailer my venture is on now was originally for a Pearson 25 and it was heavy as ****

So lets assume for giggles that this guy is legit, comes tomorrow, likes my 16 footer and agrees to a swap.

I'm in this 16 foot boat for less than $500, and have already pilfered it's mast boom and sails for my venture23 Lake setup

I can, with the neighbors help, build a cradle and put my venture23 up for winter (almost time anyway) and go get this one

From the pics of the interior it looks nice, and the cabin is sooooo much bigger. I don't know much about O'day though, and have learned it has a lead keel/swing keel and thats gonna be heavier than my venture...

so thoughts from the group? I am mostly afraid if this goes through that I will like the Oday better as the cabin is nicer..and then I might have to leave this group with out a venture 23

always an adventure round here

cheers

Why does he want to trade that 27 Oday for a tiny 19 foot piece boat? I would wonder about that.

The Oday is a nice boat if clean. I have a friend who had one. Love it. But your right, it likely won't fit your trailer or your trailer is not strong enough.

My trailer is for a 25 foot pearson with a lead keel...My bunks and etc are still adjustable so I could probably get away with hauling it home

That boat was heavy as hull and the trailer supported it.

Think an Oday would be heavier?

I looked at Sailboat data and it says Dis: 3750 for the pearson
and 3962 for the O'Day

is the Displacement and dry weight the same?

I think the trailer can handle it...the Pearson was much larger than this O'day looks

but keep it coming

as to why he wants to trade is beyond me, but if he is legit and wants to I am in...

The photo of the Oday looks very nice. If it checks out and the keel isn't falling off or some weird thing, I'd trade it. You'll have to pull it and look at the center board for rust etc. The Oday is probably worth $6k or more if in good condition, clean title etc.

If you are just trailering it short ways home you may get away with it.

For the amount of money at risk ($500), you probably can't go wrong as long as there are no major issues. I bet you could sell the motor alone for almost that much.

Well He came over yesterday and likes the 16 footer

We sealed the deal with a handshake and will swap titles later this week

He said slip is paid in full to end of October

My neighbor and I are going to have to cradle mine in the yard on wood stands for the time being

My trailer originally held a 3700lb + boat, plus gear.

O'day says it's 3900 lbs on the spec sheet on the internet so I should be good

Adjusting bunks and whatnot when we get there is going to be fun. luckily I did not permanently attach anything when I re-did this trailer for the Venture 23

It's a 2 hour tow home....we are hoping to go next weekend or so

I still can't believe I have traded up from a 16 to a 25 foot

cheers

Have you seen HIS boat in person? BTW, you said it was a 27 footer.

Unless there is something major wrong, sounds like a good deal. You'll have to tell us how you adjusted your trailer for the Oday. Might want to mark the current settings so you can put it back when needed.

Good luck and post more pics.
