Good god man, offer the boy some REAL Scotch - how about Laphroaig, Glen Garioch, Bowmore, Talisker or Aberlour... I'd think one of those would do nicely....
Slamjammer wrote: . . . Laphroaig, I think. Very nice.
Long-time friend is a single-malt afficianado, and Laphroaig's his favorite ... tastes (to me) like charred sneakers. I prefer Balvenie, Bowmore or Glenmorangie - all a little smoother, less affronting (though that's likely true of everything on the shelf).
I get a full-quart(*) in the duty-free shops, Taiwan or Tokyo airports, for bout 40-USD. Makes me very happy
* Actually, I'm unsure of the exact bottle size, but it's a big'un.
(Guess that's why it makes me very happy).
I had some decent stuff in Prestwick, once upon a time
I used to visit Prestwick (pronounced Praystweek) often for my work. Stayed in a Hotel that has all 100 single malts in their bar. If you ordered a malt the barman would look outside to see what the weather was, if it was raining; checked his watch to see the time of day; inquired as to what kind of day you were having; how you felt; what your plans were for the evening--then and only then he would pour you the perfect malt. Once I had with me a young assistant who wanted some Coke with his malt. The barman refused. The Scots take their whisky seriously! Nearest distillery to Prestwick is Auchentoshan on the west side of Loch Lomond. Very light taste with no peat at all--Admiral likes it!
Our favorite Highland scotch is Craggenmore and our favorite Islay is Aardbeg. However our most favorite is the free stuff offered by a friend on the cockpit of the boat as the sun dips below the yardarm...........(whatever a yardarm is.)

Interesting topic! I just returned from a 10 day vacation in Scotland and spent a good deal of time tasting the different whiskys. I think when I retire I will settle in Scotland and spend my days searching for a bad barrel of Scotch. My favorite so far is Highland Park but I was only able to get through about 20 of them.
Sorry to ask what may be a naive question (and I apologize for moving back on-thread - and off Scotch ) but how perpetual is the annual/semi annual ritual of bottom painting? In other words, if one changes the circumstances (slip -> mast up on trailer) is one still consigned to forever bottom painting?
I ask not only as indicated above, but also as someone looking at used boats. I recall that, Moe, you had indicated that in your search you were looking for non-bottom painted boats. But if left alone, won't the bottom paint eventually slough off (certainly the ablative will). And wouldn't some fine grit sandpaper and some elbow grease take care of the rest?
I keep mine in a slip from May- Oct, I did the Interlux barrier coat and CSC antfouling myself it now cost me approx $120.00 (cdn) every 3 years for 2 litres of Interlux CSC. We spend time on the boat in the slip which makes it much more accessable and not look as much out of place as having it on the trailer

I had 3 layers of ablative paint placed on mine after a 6 month failure. Black, blue and black for $1500 and removing a layer of barnacles. The other thing that might not be apparent on a bottom painted boat is the gelcoat may have been sanded off during barnacle removal. I thought that was a high price. For boats who are in the water most of the time and especially if they are docked in an area with currents, I recommend at least two layers of different colors if using ablative paint. If you get a layer of barnacle growth, the expense of a bottom job goes up a lot.
Slamjammer wrote:Maybe the $1500 estimate for bottom paint isn't too high afterall. Check out the response I got from a local marina:
>>>Thanks for the request. The rate on your boat would be $2483.00. This price includes primer, paint, tape, rollers, brushes and labor.
I'm not sure why they think it's worth $2483....seem's very high to me.
What have other Mac owners paid to have it done?
I am getting mine done by my dealer (BWY) for $750.00 after the first barrier coat and bottom paint, It should cost $300.00 +/- every year or two to repaint. You should really bring your boat down to a yard to show them that there is not much surface to paint. I am sure that the company you called doesn't quite understand the Macgregor hull. Good Luck!!!!
