'97 Yamaha F50 prop

Post by mc2 »

I have been all through the archives to look for a "recommended" prop and have come to the conclusion that every :macx: seems to be different depending on motor and weight.
so here is my question:

I am (was) currently running an 11-5/8 X 11 3 blade and can achieve 5000 RPM's and 17 mph @ WOT (with food, drinks, 24 gal gas, wife and 2 kids) I spun the prop hub last weekened and am looking to either upgrade or replace and the mechanic says that I can go with a 11-5/8 X 9 either 3 blade or a dual thrust prop to get the motor more toward the MFG recommended WOT of 5700-6000 RPM (if that's the case, was the current prop the factory one or did the PO change it?)

since I do not have the big foot option I am stuck with the smaller diameter prop and have to rely on pitch change to make up the difference.

Has any one or does any one currently have the dual thrust prop of similair size on their 50hp 4-stroke? if so, which size did you go with and was there any benifit to spending the extra $ on the dual thrust comapred to the standard 3 balde?

If there is an archived topic on this particalur motor and prop and i just missed it, can you please foward it?

Thanks,
Mike

With the same rated engine power, rated engine speed differs between brands, as does the final drive ratio, and prop diameter, so it follows that all other things being equal, it's best to get specific advice from those with the same engine, boat, and loading conditions.

Sounds right to me. I think the loose rule is something like 400 engine rpm change per inch of prop pitch change. FWIW. But do put more weight on the recommendations of those with this same combo.

I have a 1998 Yammy 50 hp with a 12 x 3 x 9 pitch prop.
Gets me 17 - 18 mph. at wot.
