Rebedding the outboard mounting screws M26X
I read that the bottom 2 motor mount screws should be removed and rebedded every 3 years or so to prevent water seepage and rotting of the plywood core. (I thought it was all fiberglass...)
Any comments on how to best to this job? The boat has a Merc Big Foot 50 mounted with a white polyethelene backing plate. This plate has buckled a bit.
How much torque should be applied? Other comments?
Thanks

My bolts are covered with 3M 5200
I moved the motor up two bolt holes once. My Mac26X dealer installed the motor and used 3M 5200 all throught the holes. The bolts were difficult to get out, but they came out, and I put 3M 5200 all the way through on them again when re-installing.
..
I never heard of the rebedding of the bottom bolts every 3 years. It makes good sense to discover rot before it is a major problem.
..
I hope that when you inspect those bolt holes you find no rot.

There is a bulge in the transom. I assume for reinforcement. I mounted my own motor on an 02 and don't recall any 'wood'. Definitely wood in aft part of pedestal where steering and instruments are mounted.
Never heard of having to recaulk motor mount. I don't think I'd do it.
Mark, youre our transom guy; what do you think?

my 96x has wood in the transom.....concerned me....I found it untreated and open to water inside the ballast intake gate....crap I says......I sealed as best I could and when out of the water, always check to make sure sealed and not punky..........no problems yet.

Herndon, the Yamaha has a couple 'tangs' or hoist tabs with holes under the cowling. Hung the motor on a live oak limb in the back yard and backed the boat under it.
Took a couple days lining the thing up just right, then about an hour drilling, sealing, and bolting the thing on. Motor was shipped from the dealer. I picked it up at fellow Mac owner's shop in Alabama to avoid the FL sales tax.
